Ext User(T Rex)

using win98,
when starting up computer it goes to Microsoft registry checker(blue
screen), goes thru "looking for valid system registry keys then stops on
"checking system registry structure" at "48% complete".
Can startup in safe mode and have used "registry checker and replaced
some files but still won't start up as per normal.
I havwe tried reinstalling windows but it won't complete installation on
rebooting.
Any ideas?
Thank you T.

I would check the memory and hard disk for faults.

Thats the evidence of some basic hardware problem.
> Any ideas?
Use the 98 install to work out what
the hardware problem is and fix that.
Try with the absolute minimum of hardware you can do an
install with, just video card, one hard drive and cdrom drive.
If that still fails, try a different video card and check
the hard drive SMART data with Everest from
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
If that still doesnt help, check the motherboard for bad
caps. Those are usually blue or black plastic coated post
like things that stick up vertically from the motherboard.
Check that the tops are completely flat, no bulges or obvious
leaks. If you have any of those, replace the motherboard.

So why on earth are you using Win98?
Dump it and install XP.

Latest news flash - son admits to installing and using "registry
mechanic" tryout version. He said it was cleaning registry and was
prompted to restart computer and hasn't worked since....
I suspect this may have changed something in registry.
Can I recover previous registry settings somehow?
Or does this information help finding the problem.
Father and son still talking... just.

Time for a retrospective abortion.
> I suspect this may have changed something in registry.
> Can I recover previous registry settings somehow?
Not with 98. You could if you were running XP.
> Or does this information help finding the problem.
Yes. Just how did you do the reinstall ? If you didnt
format the hard drive first, it may well be that the
registry is rather comprehensively screwed and you
need to format the drive before installing 98 now.
That will obviously lose everything installed and your data.
You could try some other registry cleaners
now, you might find one will fix the mess.

Better to format the drive and do a clean install, formatting your drive
NTFS.

Can you start Registry Mechanic in Safe Mode?
It may have done an automatic backup of the registry which you may be able
to restore from within the program.

I have had similar problems in the past.
IIRC I used to boot using a floppy and delete the windows directory through
DOS. I think I had to change the properties of some files using ATTRIB so
that they could be deleted.
Then I would reinstal Windows and the programs.
Now if you have any important data on that drive you might consider
disconnecting it for the moment and installing a new drive. Instal Windows
on the new drive and transfer across the important data from the old drive
later on.

He's got Win 98 - no indication he wants to change.
( But I can't see why you wouldn't want to)
I've got a P4P800 and AFAIR, I couldn't get 98 to install properly - wrong
M/B drivers. It's the sandbox I use to test software and I need 98 to make
sure it runs.

98SE was passable but XP is far more stable and intuitive.
If you have the processor power which the OP does, and you like Windows,
you'd be crazy not to run XP.
I have it running sweetly on a Celeron 600 laptop.
