I'm looking to convert Super 8 home movie films to DVD..
What ways are there to do this?
What would it cost commercially?

The easiest way would be to buy a cheap consumer DVD Recorder and just plug
you camera into it and press record.

If you want to use a computer and do some fancy editing and titles, you'll
need a video capture card, some video editing software (eg Ulead or
Pinnacle), a DVD Burner, and a lot of time. You'll need a lot of time up
your sleeve with this option.

Super 8 is a film format. Only output is to project it onto a wall
(screen). Can't plug that into a DVD recorder.

A friend and I tackled this recently. We projected it onto a sheet on the
wall, and used a DV video camera to record it. But then you need the
software to make a DVD from this recording, which we had.

A friend had a bundle of old super 8 films transferred to DVD 3 years ago
using a high quality telecine link. Much, much better quality than
projecting it on a wall - indeed, the quality was outstanding. I had some
transfers done professionally using the wall method and they were much
poorer. Telecine will cost a bit but old irreplaceable footage can often be
worth it. You'll find a few places that do telecine in the Yellow Pages in
Sydney and Melbourne and doubtless in the other capitals. My memory's a bit
vague but I think I was quoted a few hundred for converting 3 minutes of
footage to DVD. Naturally the condition of the film will influence your
choices. Oh, and check that they actually use telecine
