A fairly computer illiterate (a little like myself in areas) friend in the
country tells me his computer sometimes self starts when shut down but
power still to unit and phone line jack still attached and a phone call is
received on the line extension in the other room..he is on dialup and
running WinXP-Pro...and uses AOL....is this possible?.....Have told him to
go to device manager and find modem properties and see if there is any
checked boxes saying 'Allow this device to bring computer out of
standby'.....or stay off the jungle juice.
Thanks in advance for any help...

Might also be a power management setting in the BIOS
A wake up event enabled.

Yes it can if the hardware and software is set to
allow the system to be activated by the modem.

He should also check if the motherboard has
WAKE UP ON MODEM activated - this is usually
enabled/disabled in the BIOS some do it by jumper.
