Hi everyone,

I was able to network my desktop and laptop together using a simple
crossover cable and running Windows XP Pro network setup on both of them. It
was working Ok but recently, a "Limited or No Connectivity" message appears
on the desktop which reads "You might not be able to access the Internet or
some network resources. This problem occurred because the network did not
assign a network address to the computer." Other details shown are:

Physical Address: 00-08-A1-24-6B-E9
IP Address: 169.254.152.248
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: Blank
DNS Server: Blank
WINS Server: Blank

I tried to fix the problem using the Windows network "Repair Command" but
without any luck. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

TIA
John

What's your NIC brand ? If its a Marvell Broadcomm, try updating to the
current driver.
Or if it was working all the time, try checking your cable or maybe virus /
spyware attack on your TCP/IP stack.

Laptop shows it is connected to the desktop. Both systems are protected by
Norton Antivirus, Spysweeper and ZoneAlarm.

See what happens with ZoneAlarm turned off, that fucks a lot of networking.

<-- ditto on that. a customer who uses a NIS 2006 then configures her email
also get that.
After talking hours to Optus ppl, they advise her to use webmail instead of
the mail client as there is something blocking the mail send out.
End up the NIS has to be completely uninstalled to have the mail client
going.

I guess hardware firewall is still the way to go.
