Hi
I have a teenager here that I would like to time limit on the computer.
Would someone please be able to recommend a proggie for this purpose. I've
searched out a couple but not sure which would be suitable. Ideally, I'd
like to limit her sessions to a few hours a day without interfering with my
time when I log on.
Thanks
Linda

I think the program you require is called a 'parent'.
Was once a very popular and well respected program.

What OS are you using ? It isnt that hard with XP with no
addons. Forget whether that is included with XP Home tho.

Does she know anyone that cluey about PCs ?
It isnt hard to do over any system if you know what you are doing.

Doesn't matter, they all suck.

Assuming some don't, care to enlighten them?

Individual cages would have their downsides tho.

That restriction is done at the user level, not hard
to do that over if you know what you are doing.

How about the nurses; do they "suck" as well?

Depending upon your set up you can get a
program like Wingate which is actually an
Internet access sharing program that includes
the capability to set up user access times and
some versions also allow control of sites to access.
In the past I have set up Wingate for an organisation
where certain staff had access only during set
times and the training room only had access to
set sites during set times - accessibility is tied to
the user log on ID.

Using XP Pro. She's reasonably clued up on the computer but with her being
on her own for a few hours a day I would prefer it that she isn't able to
log on until I get home. Hm, might just have to disconnect the ADSL and not
give her the pw?

That sounds like something that would be useful here.

can you ring your adsl provider and see if you can change the logon to need
a password or something similar, rather than automatically connect? at
least that way, she can use the pc to do homework etc, but can't hit the net
till you are there to put in the password... :) you can probably
set up a bios or boot password, but if she needs the pc for schoolwork, that
ain't gonna work.

i've had teenagers, been there, done that... it'll pass ...

You want to stop her using the PC at all, or just
stop her using the net when you arent there ?

Disconnecting the adsl manually isnt likely to work very
well unless you are very reliable with that sort of thing.

Yep. That's the best way. If it's ADSL and there is a router with built in
login client, then she can disable with the help of Tech support and use
Utitlity like RASPPP to enable 'manual' login.

Yep. It's sounding more like the thing for me to do. Already have a password
for the modem and the ADSL so I guess it's time to change those and try that
way.
You're correct about using the PC for homework, but I just don't want her
"chatting" etc until one of us is hovering around ;-)

True, though nursing homes for the demented and otherwise broken people are
not far removed from cages.

It's a PITA to commit to remeber to "activate" this type of blocking, but it
certainly works. Cahne the pswd on the router login and it'll certainly be no
login until you get it back in sync.

My router has a setting which allows me to schedule (or rather block) use
of the external connection (internet). It's an old netgear one. I can also
block access to urls and ips if I want. Maybe yours has similar features?
Of course as with most features I don't use them. I prefer my kids
(12/10/5) to self manage their computer usage.
