View Full Version : Win 2000 - no cd-rom

hi,

I have a user who has managed to disable their cd-rom drive in Win 2000. I
have tried to uninstall the drive then re-install it, recovery console from
boot-up disk, replace cdrom.inf file and run the hardware wizard to add the
cd-rom drive back to the system.

In the device manager i get a yellow exclamation mark next to the cd-rom
drive.

Any suggestion?

What does the error text say when you hit the properties for the drive in
device manager?

What about disc management in mmc?

Error text goes on to say "There is a problem with the device driver for
this device. Use the troubleshooter to repair this device" I have tried
the troubleshooter suggestions to no avail.

I have tried disc mngt console from mmc but with no success. For some
reason it does just not want to update/change/rollback the cd-rom driver
that it has installed...

Check the IDE drivers - my best guess would be that is where the problem is.

Is it the old upper filters lower filters problem?

Worth a shot, except the HDD uses ide drivers if i'm not mistaken and there
is no problem there. It just wont let me replace the cd-rom drivers after
uninstalling it and then re-installing it.

I have seen the situation where for whatever reason the correct IDE
drivers have not been installed, and Windows uses a very basic mode to
access the hard drives only. It sometimes works to remove the
controllers using Device Manager, and seeing whether they are correctly
detected on a reboot.

Thats normally seen with a resource conflict.

Work out what is conflicting and fix that.

Swap the CD rom over and see if you can see that.

Sounds like you need the drivers off the install disk. I went through
this the other day.
