I have jsut picked up a cheap second hand pc (P111, 256 ram, 8 g hdd) for
the mother in law. The hdd has been partitioned. When i go to load o/s it
does not read from the cd or the floppy. I get past the post and then I end
up with the curser flashing. Any suggestions. Have changed the boot
process around to try floppy, cd and hdd.

There's a reason it was cheap.

Can be a lot of things, ****ed motherboard with bad caps,
problem with the ram, not configured properly, etc etc etc.
Does it see the hard drive, cd drive and
floppy drive on the black post screen ?
How do you know the hard drive has been partitioned ?
Try unplugging all the drives and see if it will whine about
the lack of anything bootable. It may just be hanging when
it trys to enumerate the hard drives, because the ribbon
cable has been plugged in backwards or something.

Try making the CD rom the first boot device.
It should prompt you to press a key to boot from CD rom drive.

its hanging trying to sort out the ide master \ slave settings
most prolly are wrong or the cd or hard disk is faulty
disconnect all but floppy
disable boot from all but floppy
put in a win98 boot disk and see if it boots through
then plug in hard disk
if ok plug in cd drive see what happens
this process will tell you where the fault is

Your first problem is the minimum requirements
for XP is Celeron P300, that is the next level
of processor at 300 Mhz
Few plain Pentiums had auto load from CD
try loading Win 98 from floppy boot

That last is coming from thats loaded off the CD, not from the bios.

He didn't say the processor frequency, it could be much more than 300.
And how do you mean "celeron is the next level of processor"?

Started with PII's boards, firmly entrenched by PIII time.
All the same, win2k may be better suited to this box.

Actually he did say P111 - would normally be the
Processor designated as a Pentium and the speed
being 111 mhz, which is an odd speed. It is
Possible he meant PIII or Pentium 3 if he had
used the number 1 when he should have used
the capital 'i' I as the roman numeral 1
ie PIII means Pentium 3 and P111 means plain
Pentium at 111 mhz
Pentium or Pentium 1 went in a socket 7
These were to be replaced with the Pentium 2,
using a socket 370 nor slot style CPU storage.
They had trouble and a cut back version called
the Celeron was marketted. Then an improved
vversion sold as the Pentium 3.
Intel continued to sell cut back processors as
Celerons for later versions. Thue you get
Pentium
Celeron
Pentium 3 & P 3 Celeron
Pentium 4 & P 4 Celeron & P 4 Dual & P 4 Dual Celeron
Pentium 4 64bit

OK, I was reading PIII since I've never heard of a 111MHz Pentium (not out
fo the box that's for sure!).

There were some weird ones I have had Pentium 100,
133, 150, 166, 233, 266, 333. Also seen systems that
register the Pentium processor speed as 88, 213 and 313.
Never heard of a 111 but not impossible if overclocked
or had a jumper setting out.

The first Celerons were made to the P2 CPU and
thus higher than a plain Pentium. A Pentium 333
goes in a socket 7 board while a Celeron 300 goes
in a socket 370 board - two different processor
styles with the Celeron later and higher than the
original Pentium

Correct but has its uses. I recently reload a system with
DOS 6.2 and Win 3.11 for a client - needed to run some
old applications. Client is a Windows addict and wont
even consider one machine with Linux and WINE to
access the old applications.

over for another. Original had problem with mother board. Have now loaded
xp on to P3 - 500 and is running fine.

Yeah yeah. Now your're being silly. He means a PIII. We all know that.
