I am considering upgrading
But noticed the current stock of AMD CPUs 754, 939, 940 will be replaced
with a new socket 940 cpu range Code Named M2. Which is supposed to be
released in Quarter 2, 2006.
Should I wait for the new CPU range or buy now?

Also which cpu will perform better?

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4GHz Socket 939 or
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 3800+ 2.0GHz Socket 939

Which a local store has advertised for the same price.

Well they will be expensive and they will use DDR2 Ram so basically its your
choice and money

939 is the current favourite and dual core appears to be the way to future
proof your system.

M2 platform isn't coming to around June, too long to wait for me, i'll
settle on a dual core socket 939 for now. DDR2 isn't much better then
DDR1 but wiuth higher latencies, but can reach higher speeds and run on
less volts.

DDR3 on the other hand sounds like a large increase in performance! but
that is a year off.

Dual core would be the way to go, but single core still has it's
advantages for now. Games still run better on a single core, but the
difference is quite small, so dual core is the way to go for future
proofing now that all software should be made with multicore in the
mainstream.

I myself am probably going to splash down on an opteron 165 if i can
find one. Suppose to be cheaper then 3800+ X2 and perform around the
same. But!! are great overclockers! and reaching FX60 speeds is pretty
comon with these chips. (after all they are really just underclocked FX
cpu's with 1MB cache per core)

Anyway enuf waffling from me.

Thanks. Will probably just go for a motherboard and AMD 3800+ x2 which
should be a good upgrade from my old. P3-1gig I'll be upgrading from.
Plus I'll probably need one of those new 24pin 12v atx 2.0 power supplies
(for powering up the SLI slots) as well.
