Could someone tell me if I have to activate a toolbar to do this.
Looked it up in my paperback excel manual but found nothing.
I had it working before but now its gone. I used to be able to do it
by clicking on Excel in the bootom toolbar which displayed the names of
excel files that were open. Can anybody help
Thanks in advance.

I always use Ctrl+X or Ctrl+C to cut or copy and Ctrl+V to paste or
right click to paste special. Using these keys you can copy between
cells, sheets or workbooks.
What exactly are you trying to do?

You no longer see a seperate button for each excel file that you have open?
Go to tools > options. On the view tab there is an option to "show windows
on takbar which will fix your promlem:
"I used to be able to do it by clicking on Excel in the bootom toolbar
which displayed the names of excel files that were open"
You can also toggle windows by hitting ctrl+tab.
None of this should be affecting the functionality of cut/copy and paste
between open workbooks though.

I'm assuming you mean you can't see each file open separately in the
taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
Open Excel, Tools menu -> Options -> View tab -> tick "Windows in
Taskbar" option. Close & re-open Excel.
When this option is unticked, you access the individual files through
the Window menu of the open Excel program - at the bottom of this menu
will be a list of all the files that are open.

I think you have just answered my question. Originally I was working on
one spreadsheet with another opened in the background. This enabled me
to cust and paste between both spreadsheets.

Thanks very much for all the help I have received. Its strange that I
could not find this info in my Excel Manual. Never mind, I am not and
Excel expert anyhow.

If the truith be known, the last and worst place to look for anything
will be in the manual. After all, the manual is usually compiled by
the same people who wrote the program ... if the program has
shortcoings and/or causes difficulties, it is unlikely the writers
will have included details in the manual.
Google is your best friend. There are countless internet pages written
by actual users who have experienced problems, solved the problems,
and posted the results to numerous chat rooms and help web sites.

Ctrl + Tab will toggle between open workbooks without having to use the
mouse. I prefer this to using the taskbar "buttons".
