Hello I have an old pentuim 200 win 98 machine, has been running
well and out of the blue it won't boot up.
The cpu fan comes on, the hard drive churns for a couple of seconds, the led
on the cd drive flashes on, the power and hard drive LEDs light up on the
case.
There is no activity at the monitor at any stage, like its still on stand
by, and there is no beeps from the mother board at all.
I reseated the video card and even replaced it with another, but this didn't
help. Any clues here?

The monitor may have died? Do you have any other monitor to swap as a
test? Or the power supply might have deteriorated sufficiently to not
provide sufficient power to all parts of the system?

Did it used to beep on startup ?

Can be a variety of things. Measure the 5V rail from the
power supply at one of the drive connectors if you have
a multimeter and know how to use it enough to do that.
Check the caps on the motherboard visually. They are the
usually blue or black plastic covered posts that stick up
vertically from the motherboard. The tops should be flat.
If any of them are buldging, that cap has failed and you
need a new motherboard or new system.
Try taking all the cards and ram out and see if it will at least
beep when you turn it on. If it wont, try another power supply.
If that still doesnt beep, remove the motherboard from
the case and run it loose on the desktop. You may have
a short to case and thats the best test for that.
If it does beep with no cards, put the ram back and see if
it will beep, complaining about no video card. If it does, put
just the video card back and see if you get it whining about
the lack of a bootable device.
Its unlikely to be a failed cpu.

Thanks, the monitor doesn't come out of standby, and I swapped monitors as
well.

I removed ram, all cards and there was no difference, still no beep or
other. The motherboard is getting 5volts on each of the 3 red power leads
at the main connector. No visually damaged caps on the motherboard.
I havn't removed the motherboard yet.
CPU fan comes on
Hard drive churns for a few seconds
cd drive LED flashes geen once.
Monitor doesn't come out of standby.
No beeps

Clearly the motherboard isnt starting up for some reason.
Try another power supply, it may not be providing
the Power Good signal or something.
Worth trying resetting the cmos.
Try unplugging all the ribbon cables from the motherboard,
there is a slight possibility that one of the drives is loading
something significantly.
If that doesnt help try removing the motherboard from the
case, even tho thats significant work with most systems.
If none of that helps, try another cpu if you can do that for free.
Not likely to be the problem tho, they dont die very often.
If it still doesnt even beep with nothing
plugged in, the motherboard has died.

If, as Rod said to try, the PSU isn't working, you've done your CPU. Been
there, done that, a fortnight ago.....sigh....
