OK, This is linked to the lan party thread, but Watcher thought it would be better to start a new thread, OK, .. since most forum posters are unable to grab a copy of Counter Strike 1.6, It's offcial we are starting on the freeware game Return to Castle Wolfenstein : Enemy Territory, This has a themed WW2 kind of feel and can fit 64 players into a server, but unfortunately, i don't think we can persuade enough people to have a full house game. Anyways this is a very popular freeware game and i reccomend this to ANYONE in this forum that wants to take part in this online gaming session with us and just have some fun .. and see whose the ultimate FPS master :). Please, give this a go, it's free .. why not?

Yep, installed the game and when I go to play it I get the option to host a game or play online.
I've never played games online and this whole server thing is beyond me.
If I pick the online game option I get a huge list of what I assume are games being played via servers, but I have no idea on what to go for. Is there like a newbie place to go and have a bash without being slaughtered the minute you join a game?
Do you just click on one and the game starts?

Yep click a sever then click join server and it should connect you to the server then load the lvl they are playing.
(oh I don't know if it has join server button,it's just a button that enters you in the server)
Isn't this game horror I hate horror...

Don't know how to do that Las. :D I get a big list and it's all mumbo jumbo to me.
I just joined one and it took a while to load but the game started and it was jerky as hell. The audio was choopy as hell too, so I think I might have to give this online stuff a miss.

and your right watchie has all the american ones. theres a patch to get the aussie ones which are usually all under 100 pings at least. :|

ok .. i found the patch

http://www.gamearena.com.au/files/details/html/enemy-territory-patch-v260#

if you download that patch when you play next there should be servers with 1 pings .. not 100+ pings .. those are the ones you want.

try Internode servers. once you dl and get into it you will know what i mean. :)

Thanks for the patch Las.
I don't know what pings mean:rolling: , but after the install I saw a few Aussie ones and I tried one in Brisbane which was very smooth to move around in and the audio was fine.:)

i dont know what they mean either mr watchie :o
all i know is that you want the servers with 1 ping. then it will run smooth. :)

Ping represents how long it takes data to travel between you and the server. It's Ping Pong - your computer sends a message of "Ping" to the server and it sends back a message of "Pong". The number is how long it takes for the Pong to come back.

So the lower the number, the faster you and the server can exchange data. Obviously a low number means you can transfer more information, so you will be able to run the game more quickly.
