Asked a fellow who had a Toyota engine in the back of his '95 Hilux, what
engine it actually was. He said it was outa the Hilux and it had a stuffed
head due an overheat. Turned out he paid $3500 at a spareparts/wreckers type
place on the coast for a second hand engine and its installation. There was
3 months warranty.

Seems a little excessive I thought,..but must be about right given supply
and demand!?

A 3L ???? If so what an idiot for (a) improper maintenance (b) for not
just getting a new head (in more than one way) for a lot less than
that and spending the Sunday arvo with a beer or two.

Meh, me and me mate have a 2L diesel sitting around from a similiar
silly punter.

Rubs chun, hmmmm... should start collecting.

I got a 2L sitting in the back of my Hilux, just waiting for me to get a
new head gasket and fit the turbo, new drive shafts will also be needed
as I'm dropping in the gearbox out of a surf in as well

Chuck the 2L and go for the 1UZE, far superior motor and will cost less to
run, well until ya get up it. Have a look at http://www.boosted4runner.com/

very tidy example.

Wouldve been a 3litre V6?. They still fetch that good dollars as they are a
very popular motor. Ive seen rooted ones go for more than $900. Fully
working in good nic they can fetch up to $4k without install. Mind you for
$4k Id be doing a better swap than the 3litre V6.

Might been diesel perhaps?
Late model V6 could cost that too I spose installed, might have been less
if he had given them old motor too.

T'was a 4 cyl petrol. The fellow was a farm type of guy. Going by the black
deposits down the front of the motor (the belt-cover was off), the seals
were leaking pretty bad and the oil changes were, ahh,..a little generous in
interval time.

I think the popularity of the vehicle plays a *large* part in used parts
pricing,..but $3000! (presuming they charged $ 500 for R&R)

No, it was a 4 cylinder petrol motor with rubber-band driven cam.

I just paid $4400 for 2nd hand engine for my NJ Pajero. Price was fitted,
and came with a 6 month/25,000km parts and labour warranty. Engine was not a
reco. Purely second hand. Price also included new timing belt, platinum
plugs. Mileage on the engine in question? "Around 100,000km" Condition of
the timing belt that was taken out of it suggested it had not been replaced
that long ago, so I'd guess somewhere around 130,000km or so. I'm picking it
up tomorrow after the final bill topped $5300. Mr Mitsubishi, in his wisdom
decided to put a shoddy little $3 bush and seal in the plenum chamber where
the butterfly rod goes through the front. Mr Mitsubishi decided it would be
fun to see what happens when you tell people they can't just replace this
little piece of plastic and the seal! You have to replace the whole plenum
chamber! Chaching!! $750 thanks very much! Bastards!
