In winter my starter gets just that tiny bit colder & the shaft wont retract
immediately...its an ugly noise. I open it once at the start of winter when
it first does it & spray some 'lock lube' (graphite in a spray can) onto the
shaft. This fixes it for maybe a month or 2 at a time.

Is there a better product i should be using like a teflon ?

You could try just about any lube that doesn't collect dirt. Tried moly
spray? I bought some from Blackwoods?? about 12 years ago, was $35 IIRC.

What type of starter might it happen to be???
Just a few possibilities are....

pre-engage pinion,
inertia drive,
bendix drive,
air operated,
pilot motor,
crank handle....

Which more or less covers the more common types. They can also differ
somewhat between brands, of which there are probably dozens. Some
manufacturers are game enough to put their name on them while others
aren't so confident.

You might also happen to find a little plate underneath the bonnet
(usually rivetted to the firewall) that gives the make and model of
vehicle. You'd no doubt be amazed as to just how useful such
information can be in the total absence of any other clue.

Grab some of the lube used on mig welders and try it... usually works
well ( its sillycone:)

Tks john...its on a BMW bike..very similar to a car. Sits out beside the
donk very easily to access. Bike has a dry clutch & is quite 'car like' I
can drop it out in 5 mins flat.

I know i should pull it apart & clean it properly but even if i do this...i
still would like to lube the shaft & starter pinion to stop it happening
again. The site talks about moly grease but is this suited to a qld summer ?
So many sites on the net refer to north america & europe so i assume diff
lubes are needed.

Use moly grease on my chain in Qld. Does that tell you anything, Bavarian
Mower Works owner :-0
I'd still avoid anything that would collect dirt on a starter shaft
especially if you travel dirt roads.

Tks atec...i have a good supply of high quality silicone grease. No troubles
with it going doggo in our summer ?

Absolutely! Iwould be inclined to disassemble it, clean it, and lubricate
with a completely dry lubricant, probably powdered graphite. Should work
for quite a long time.

do the job.

Protects metal joints from seizure. Prevents galling and corrosion on

This product, in common with most other antiseize products contains grease
and will collect dust, eventually gumming up the works.

Yebbut it's a BMW so it won't get dust on it (yucky dirt roads, ee poo)
and doesn't have a chain driven final drive like a proper motorcycle ;-)
