Images in my local area have just updated within the past few days...
previously the aerial photographs were at least 3 1/2 to 4 years old;
now they're about 3 months old. The images also appear to be of greater
resolution, and extend a lot further (replacing some very low
resolution images in semi rural areas further north)
Just curious whether it's specific to my area (northern fringe suburbs
of Melbourne) or they''ve done a batch update from a wholesale supplier.

I'd tend to think that the resolution of the coverage of a given area is
entirely dependent on the CIA's interest in that area. Note how fine the
resolution around potential military or political targets is, and how gariny
that of farmland areas is.
I suppose the one good thing about living in the far West of Sydney is that
the CIA has no immediate plans to implant political insurgents.

Luckily I screen capped a few interesting areas before they updated,
which lets me do some interesting things. Here's one example, an
animated gif with 2 frames:

(Look carefully - both frames are of exactly the same location...)

Images are still 3-4 years old for my area (N/W Sydney)

My area of Adelaide is showing newer images at the same resolution as the
older ones that they replaced. (They were already pretty good)
I've noticed though that some areas near central Sydney that were of very
poor resolution have also been updated.

Hume Freeway, Craigieburn Bypass. That section was opened to the public
about 6 months ago. Using Google Earth's older pics I found at least 3
separate properties that were acquired and flattened... but they did
spare an old shed which I never would have been able to see without the
freeway being there:

I'm in Grafton NSW. My area seems to be updated. The red car from next door
is no longer there. But the palms which were removed late last year are
still in the picture.

Also I used to live 20km west of town. The house has never been
distinguishable until now.

I'm seeing my suburban house for the first time too - in early 2003 my
area was still a grassy paddock. ;) There are now very few vacant
blocks left in the subdivision.

Thanks for the heads up! My place has come out of the blurries also, so I

Looks like you have a nice sized block there! I was just marvelling at
how little my suburban neighbours had in the way of back yard myself -
I thought *our* house to land size ratio was pretty bad... turns out I
was wrong. ;)

Either our corner of East Brighton contains some highly classified information,
or it is of no interest to the CIA. Either way, you can count the cars in
Safeway Middle Brighton carpark, but there is a really poor quality strip
roughly south of Centre Road and west of Bluff Road. You can make out the
Brighton golf course, but that is about all.

My place has been clearly visible since I first started using Google

Hint, I'm near Manly "Boy Charlton" Pool.
