Hey all... took sum photos today, with the intention of the end result being black n white photos...
Problem is.. instead of shooting colour and converting to greyscale in PS, I shot the photos using black n white mode... (on canon 30d)...

So im guessing this is why the images are only 600 - 700kb big.. (shot using large jpeg mode)....
Im thinkin they are small coz theres no colour...

Problem is, I got some BEAUTIES, and I was going to take to a lab to have professionally printed,... although now I am unsure as to how big I can print them without gettin fuzzy??

I did do a print A4 size on my home printer (cheap $70 printer), and they came out beautiful.. but id like to go bigger...

Any help is appreciated thanks

You should be able to print to the same size as if you were printing B&W.

The overall dimensions of the photo should still be the same as though you had shot them in colour, just that not as much data space
is required to store the information.

Assuming they're sharp, you could just about go to A3 size, assuming you're
going to put it on a wall and view it from a foot or three away (under close
inspection you'll see a bit of fuzziness on some edges and jaggies on
straight lines).

The only tricky bit with digital B/W prints is getting pure blacks and
greyscales, as you are using a colour process which tries to mix colour inks
to get black and greys. You may end up with a slight colour cast on the
print, but that might not be too bad. I'd try a single print first to see
how it turns out.

image compression size is irrelevant - jpeg is a compression format not an
image format, with size variable depending on what's captured and recorded.

really your image is still a bitmap of XxY pixels

if XxY is the same as it was in colour then the image size is the same :)

Ahh i just figured that image size would depend on file size.. ie
lots of data = larger file size = larger print size...

like i said, i printed A4 no problems it was perfect, so A3 should be achievable..

I only figured this out today, when printing on my home printer.. they came out with a slight sepia look. very effective tho... but a pain in the bum coz i got no colour left...

thanks for the help
