Hi all,
Someone needs to tell this 380 driver I saw, that FWD is not suitable
for towing. He was towing a 2-horse float down the Monash freeway this
morning. Crazy crazy man.

I have seen an idiot in a magna do that in Brisbane, Ben.
The Horse Float was so heavy on the arse of the car, the front wheels had
stuff all traction..
I guess it shows the mentality of the idiots who buy those things :-)

You have proof of your assertion that FWD is unsuitable for towing?

I was being sarcastic. Whenever people say why the 380 is failing, they
blame its FWD setup, saying Aussies want towing capability, but
obviously some Aussies are happy to buy a FWD car and tow with it.
It seems to me that it's wrong to blame FWD for the lack of sales of the
380.
I wonder what the combined sales of largish FWD cars are compared to the
sales of Commodore and Falcon, in total.

What's the bet he had 'sway bars' literally humming with the pressure.
Jack-knife city:-) - were the back wheels of the 380 actually touching

Ron, whats wrong with towing with a fwd vehicle? Now if the load is unevenly
distributed even a rwd or all wheel drive for that matter is dangerous.
I used to tow me ski boat with the 626 with no issues at all. Traction,
steering and the like was spot on. I even had one issue where fwd was
better as I hit deisel on a corner and to stop the under steer I nailed it
and being fwd it pulled itself clear of danger.

Scotty,
Anything can drag a trailer or small boat around :-)
I've done that with a Citroen, many times.
Yes they can be better in situations like slippery roads as well.
The yanks and Canadians use a lot of FWD cars, as they are safer in icy
conditions.
Towing im my book is heavy, Caravans, etc.
YES, you can tow a van with a FWD and YES many manufacturers give a
large towing capacity, but would I do it? NO!
A stable Car/Caravan is one with more weight forward, on the ball. That
means it is forcing pressure down, on the rear of the car. If the car
is FWD you would need a very good weight distribruiton hitch to transfer
weight to the front wheels. In the case of a RWD car, the power comes
from the rear wheels which enhances the traction of the car. If you
look at it this way, pick a FWD and a RWD, pulling a medium caravan up a
hill on a gravel road. The RWD has the advantage of extra weight on the
rear wheels to help give it better grip. The RWD is pushing itself up
the hill and only dragging the van. The FWD is "scratching" with the
front wheels and trying to drag it's weight, plus the weight of a van
behind it. :-)

Thanks for the physics lesson Ron, Im aware of how they should and shouldnt
be towed. The post was to put my opinion forward on yoru comment that FWDs
shouldnt be used for towing. Anyone who tows up gravel hills where the lose
of traction is immenint should be towing with a 4WD or at least AWD
(Inclusive of the 380AWD). Ideally a stable tow car shoudl be level as
should the tow'ee. Agreed that bars should be fitted regaurdless of RWD or
FWD.
Ive sooo many cars (4x4s included) unevenly weighted that they shouldve been
fined for such stupidity, two little kids in the back and off up the Bruce
at 110khr oblivious to the fact that they are but seconds away from a severe
cockup.
IMO towing should be part of your drivers licence test.

Plenty of them to go around :-)

I don't agree, but I do think you should have a separate, "tested
licence" for any towable item above a 7x4 trailer :-)

I realize seeing any 380 driver is something quite rare. A true challenge is
to find a smart 380 driver. Quite the oxy-moron IMHO!

Nooooo - all trailers. Ever sat at a public tip or boat ramp for more than
5 min on a sunny weekend? It can be amusing. The shorter the trailer, the
harder it is to reverse.

Even *seeing* a 380 is a rare event, in Shiteney traffic too.
I don't really wanna imagine what the auto industry is like,
however suspect it is done more with muscle than thought
these days.
Someone from the US once said "Ford could build a turd on wheels
and call it an F150, folk would still buy it".
Marketing, repuation, sales volume, resale
Some of those work against and for each other I guess.
