Today had to actually buy diesel as have not got back around to
the biodiesel stuff recently.
Urk $1.44/l Yuk.
Anyway as most folk know, servos usually only have one diesel pump
and perhaps one or two LPG pumps.
Had to wait a good 7 or so minutes to even get near the diesel
pump as all the petrol heads were using the petrol pumps alongside
it. At the same time down the other end of the servo there was an
empty lane that provides petrol pumps.
Right about that time, you get to thinking wouldn't it be nice if
petrol heads thought about this situation and left the diesel pump
and LPG pump areas alone when their dedicated areas are available, Or
at least only took up half a bay where possible?

I like the types that fill their car up with petrol then waddle in and
buy some groceries and waddle back out again and decide their windscreen
and windows need a clean, then oh no the washer bottle could be empty I
better check on that too.. all while someone is waiting behind. I fill
up and if someone is waiting behind I move my car to the parking spaces.
If the clerk inside isn't paying attention enough to see i've moved and
can't work out the price of my fuel then he should resign.

If I'm first into a line of pumps, I go to the last one, and go as far past
it as possible (and I have a short car) so someone can fit in behind me if
need-be.
But the other week, some bloke in a huge falcodore thing pulled behind just
as I was opening the petrol cap, and sat there with his engine idling while
I filled up. He could have fitted in behind me and reached his cap, but
either his spatial reasoning was on the blink, or he was just an idiot.
Pissed me off a bit as I'd wanted to give the windscreen a clean, but felt I
had to move out as soon as possible for Mr Twit Whose Car is Too Long.

The servo I normaly goto has a gravel driveway, sells engine parts and the
person who runs the place owns the place, however yesterday it was closed
and I was forced to use a multicongonglomerate instead so I went to Shell
rather than Horizon and proceed to put in the 25 bucks I had on me, oop's I
overfilled a touch at $25.05 so I go inside to pay and the dopy cash
register operator tries to charge me 28 bucks.
Yep knew there was a reason why I still used the unglamourous looking
industrial "Service" station.

At some point have to discover where to get old servo pumps. It
would be just too cool to install one at me mates car port and set
the price indication to reflect the cost of making the biodiesel :-)

Yup, that one pisses me orf as well, especially when they are blocking
access to the one and only diesel pump. No, worse than that when two
of them either side of the diesel pump do it - which I suspect was
part of the problem today. One women even got back into car, sat there
for a minute or too, got out, put something in the bin, got back in
sat for another almost minute before driving off.

Dunno how that works, if there is a queuing system on their equipment so
they can still clear the pump for another user while keeping the previous
sale details. I'd expect so as it would need to be "salesdroid friendly".

I worked a night shift for 7 years at a servo back about 20 yrs (not much
self-serve) One incident which stuck in my mind was the night a guy tried to
run me down. I had just told him I had no wiper inserts for his EJ Holden,
and suggested it was due the car's age. He said nothing, just got in and
made me jump-up onto the pump-island as he swung at me on the way out.

Yup, that was what I was getting at.

You get that. Sometimes I need to go the wrong side of the pump, however
still manage to judge the length of the filler hose to being plausible for
as close in as I can go.

In the past sometimes I have to back in, or otherwise weirdly park without
inconveniencing anyone else to actually get near the pump, otherwise end up
waiting far too long.

Even better when some dumb cnt sees that the space next to the LPG pump
is empty so decides to park his car there while he goes and takes a dump
in the servo dunny.
I had to wait over 10 minutes once to get to an LPG pump at a servo,
because someone had parked his non LPG ute next to it. Other petrol
heads came, filled up and left, this bloke was nowhere to be seen.
Eventually he appeared from out the back. By that stage I was sitting
on the front of my car fuming. I decided not to say anything given he
looked like an ape, and wasting 10 minutes of my life was not worth a
fight :-)

Yes, I can relate to that :-)
In Albany Creek we were all moving forward after filling so the guy behind
could start, then went and paid the attendant.
One week later there were signs on each bowser, saying "DO NOT MOVE YOUR
VEHICLE BEFORE PAYING"....
Appears the poor pricks couldn't keep up with who paid and who didn't....

No, it's because the poor pricks couldn't keep track of which pump they
were at and how much they put in.

My approach is to go down in the evening after dinner when our local servo is quiet, and I can take a little time to check the oil and/or tyres, put my fuel cleaner in and fill it up. That way I don't feel rushed, and I'm not holding anyone else up. Probably the worst time to get fuel is 6pm on a Thursday...

Used to fill a coach at the mobil in the main st of Armidale
Had to take up the two lanes in the middle, you would sit there and wait
for one car to move to you could get in. On more then one occasion some
smart prick would squeeze between the coach and the car and start
filling so I would then have to wait for them.
After a couple of times with this happening I started getting as close
to the filling car as possible.
Best bit of small car drivers not thinking was the tourists coming out
of Millaa millaa falls on the Atherton tablelands. They would hire a car
in Cairns and go up the tablelands. The windy road down is about 600m
and just enough room for 2 cars to pass. You would always get one dick
coming out would stop in the middle of the road and expect you to
reverse the coach back out. It never happened

I personally prefer to have fillers on both sides or on the centre of the
rear so that you can get to the LPG bowser either side. I've also wondered
about having fillers centre front and centre rear to be able to get to the
bowser when someone is blocking it.
The worst I've had was 2 petrol 4WDs deliberately parking me in when I had
filled at an LPG bowser and was about to leave. I had to wait for them to
fill up and leave before I could get out.

With the 4x4 single cab 'Lux with the filler more than half way up
from the end of the pickup bed, but about 2/3 down the length of the
vehicle (over 5 metres total) kinda able to get near the pump.
I suspect easier than most wagons or trucks as can drag hose over
the pickup bed to fill from the other side.

When I visited NZ 90% of the filler hoses were long enough to stretch over
almost any car to fill from the opposite side, very useful I thought.
And Fark me they even had people to fill ya tank for you on request, and
you pay no more than the rest of us. You can even get your oil and water
checked by the same bloke/bloke'ess. Not that them checking the oil does a
lot of good, the staff are usually not auto literate and remember chatting
about a bloke that was told his oil was a little low so the attendant put 1
litre of oil in, looking down the filler failed to see that the level had
risen and proceeded to pour in a 5 litre pack, when that didn't do he
started on his second 5 litre pack and was questioned by the owner. Never
before had he seen 11 litres of oil go into his motor. It was then that
another motorist stopped the young fella in his tracks and told him that the
correct use of a dipstick. They dint charge the customer for the extra 10
litres of oil but they did let him go on his merry way.
Wonder how long before he blew a seal or worse.

Vitey's petrol cap (on the right) is at the very end, near his bum. So if
you have to go to the wrong side (because all the other cars have caps on
the right too) it's easy.
