I have seen 02-03 and some 04 models XR6 turbo's for less than $30,000
its almost tempting to buy one and to fiddle and fart with one just for
shits n giggles. They are really becoming a bargain now.
Back to normal broadcasting.

Redbook says $20,400-$23,800 for a '02 XR6T... how is $30k cheap?

That's the thing if I do ever get one I would probably be fixing things
that I broke. :-)
Also I am not the biggest fan of their interiors but I can say the
interiors has grown on me some what.
But its the breaking things that really concern me. :)

why would you need to change the diff
as far as I'm aware it is a BTR diff as used with both Ford and Holdens,
even their "performance" models, why would the ford diff fail?

They're all extremely fragile and fail all the time.

The whole car is by the sounds of it.
People are posting some quite respectable numbers from the Turbo Falcons,
but reliability is quite appalling apparently. So much so that an
after-market "beefed up" parts arena virtually sprang up overnight.

You can make 'em go quick, but they won't last. I loved the XR6T when I was looking for a quickish car in 2003, but bought the Holden V8 for driveline reliability. Engine and gearbox are still perfect, never a problem. And before everyone laughs too loudly, if you get a good one they go forever. The hard part is making sure you get a good one...

Made by the same manufacturers who supply the parts to Ford?

Never had a failure with the VX SS and the Calais.
Although when I had the EL wagon the diff was starting to make a taxi noise.

Indeed although I did enjoy test driving the Typhoon F6 but knowing my luck
I buy one and end up breaking things. Although I was talking to someone who
knows his shit about turbocharges and what not. If I even plan to put a few
snails on the Calais the only major mods I really need done to the engine is
get stronger valve springs installed. Apparently a stock LS1 can take its
fair share of forced induction without letting go. But also I would get the
gearbox strengthened because thats the most likely thing to let go first if
I add a few blowers to the Calais and get really into it.

Bullshit. No-one in their right mind could possibly consider both a
Holden and a Ford when buying a new car.

The drivelines aren't that reliable.
Had a tailshaft and two diffs go in my SS. Plenty of others complaining
about diffs on ls1.com when mine let go. Didn't bother me that much as
the 2nd time it was just out of warranty so I stuck 3.9's in there. :)

No, most of the companies I've seen are small engineering firms making parts
to replace the standard Ford crap :)

I know the ls1.com lads have had some issues with diffs, but I suspect many of them drive their cars a fair bit harder than I do. Most of my driving is done at normal speeds, with the power usually only used once on the move. I have never dropped a burnout. Perhaps I am fortunate to have gotten a good one. Although the car has had a few minor issues (all fixed under warranty), the driveline is tight and quiet, and has never given me a moments trouble. It now has 53k on the clock.
I would be the first to say that for regular hard driving a Falc or Commy probably wouldn't last the distance, but then, few cars would.

I tend to agree, although I'd add that I've got a few mates with SS Commy's
who regularly cane the shit out of them, and they've been remarkably trouble
free.
That's not to say that they're bullet-proof cars, as I certainly don't
believe they are and I'm sure I could break one pretty easily if I tried,
but these particular cars have suffered none of the "popular" ailments that
V8 Commodores are supposed to be famous for despite some quite regular
thrashing.

What I find interesting is just how variable the quality of these cars can be. Some people treat them like gold and they still fall to pieces. Other people can thrash them ad infinitum and they just go and go...
