If the simple-minded pundits here caught the show, they would stop blaming
the measly excise tax + GST on the high cost of petrol.

The govt should provide a rebate, because the lack of public transport
means they force people into private cars to get around. So subsidise
private transport or fix the public transport system.

If you ever had the slightest desire to own a performance car, buy one
now is all I can say.

I'm wondering how long I should really wait before I take the plunge.
By the time I get around to it, petrol won't be affordable anymore at
this rate. Stupid mortgage repayments...

Amazing isn't it that there have never been more hot hatches on the new
car market? The best bit is they use well under 10l/100 kms too, which
can not be said for the big 6s and 8s. Cheapest is the Holden Astra SRi
turbo.

Fascinating stuff, and answered a lot of questions I had about
alternatives.
Saw some video footage recently of Beijing streets in 1978 - bicycles
everywhere and only 1 or 2 cars. Currently the situation is completely
reversed. Billion odd Chinese (plus the Indians) have decided they ALL
want cars.
Can you remember the details of the 'Peak Oil' group? was it ASPO?

Well worth a look rather than watching the tabloid bullshit from ACA et

Doing research for the sake of saving a few cents at the bowser suddenly

That might be so, but then they don't perform in the same manner as the big
6's & 8's. Perticularly the 8's.

They don't have the extra uses that an 8 does, like towing and seating
capacity, but if you rarely use those functions, the everyday extra fuel
cost is pretty high.

They don't corner nearly as well as the hot hatches.

It depends largely on the "8" in question.

Some are average, like the new Ford V8 for example, while others are
exceptionally good for their capacity in a heavy car. When you're not
kicking the crap out of them, GenIII powered Commy's can return quite
remarkable fuel economy. Of course, when you stand on the loud pedal it
drops off dramatically, but even when being pushed hard they're not bad
considering their output.

You need to get out more Ben.

Drive something like a VY SS with a nice suspension. You might be very
pleasantly surprised :)

What has an XR6 turbo and a woman have in common?

Have a quick bang and they give up on ya afterwards. :-)

Knowing how I drive, I'd be lucky to get under 15l/100 kms. It would
shit me coz I'd have to fill up twice a week.

Not likely. ALL Commodores and Falcons handle like boats. :P

No surprises there. People like smaller cars both for ease of driving
and the lower fuel costs. There's a big market for hot hatches right
now, and for good reason - they've never been better.

If there was a small to medium performance car that looked like meeting
my future needs, I'd be really interested in it. But such a thing
would have to be a sedan (or maybe a wagon, or a hatch with a big boot
at least), have excellent legroom, and have space available for a
reasonably sized person to sit behind me with the driver's seat all the
way back.

That last bit is the killer for most cars. I have to drive with the
seat all the way back because I have long legs - and in most cars, it
means anyone past early primary school age simply can't sit behind me
because there's only a few cm of legroom available.

The only non-Falcadore performance car that comes to mind that may
stand a chance of fitting that bill is the Mazda 6 MPS, which I am yet
to have a good look at. I'm not anti-small car, as you know; I've
owned two of them. But I think that when I have a family, I will need
to get into a bigger car. The fact that I've wanted a V8 for years is
a bonus, although fuel prices may send me down the six cylinder route
in the end.

Yeah...with the oil running out and wowserism ruling the regulatory
environment for cars, how long do we have before driving sucks
completely?

No need to.

They are, by definition, boat like in the handling stakes. :P

Ben

Thats the same problem with me I am just too tall for these cars. And as
great as the new range of hot hatches are being introduced I just cannot
really give up overall comfort and leg room for a small car. And I
personally think the new hot hatches are pretty good like the Focus XR5,
Golf GTi or the R32 etc etc.

seize the day Marco get a V8 before its way to late for you to get one.
You don't want to be miserable because you missed out.

Fuck the costs get a 2nd job or something just do it!

You're far too considerate.

Turbo 6. :)

Sounds like the Liberty RSB would also be worth looking at. It's the car
I'd love, but I can't afford one yet.
