Granny bashed for car park
Renee Viellaris
July 12, 2006
A GREAT grandmother was viciously attacked at a Brisbane shopping centre
after refusing to give up her car park.
In an alleged case of "car-park rage", the 79-year-old woman was
assaulted from behind and left in her own pool of blood.
Robert Kenyon, 54, of Windsor in Brisbane's northwest, will appear in
Brisbane Magistrate's Court today to face one count of serious assault
of a person over 60.
Police say the elderly woman, who lives at Brighton in Brisbane's north,
was waiting for a car space at Westfield Chermside shopping centre on
June 18 but Kenyon allegedly wanted it.
When the woman parked her Ford Festiva, Kenyon allegedly got out of his
car, slammed her door shut as she tried to get out and told her to move
from the car park, police said.
But the great grandmother, who does not want to be identified, ignored
his request and with the help of her cane, began walking to the shops.
Police allege Kenyon then either violently pushed or punched her from
behind.
She fell on her face, breaking the bridge of her nose in two places,
snapped two ribs and injured her hands.
She was knocked unconscious when she hit the cement and woke up face
down in her own blood with a crowd standing around her. She was taken to
Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.
Police said photographs taken a day after the attack showed the woman's
two black eyes and a bruised lip.
Kenyon, who still had his car parked behind the great grandmother's,
waited for police to arrive after the alleged attack.
The victim told police yesterday she was still in a lot of pain.
"Even seven days after it she had trouble brushing her teeth and
eating," a police spokesman said yesterday.
"She's very independent. She lives by herself and she's switched on."
The shopping centre management released a statement saying: "Westfield
is aware of the incident and as the incident is now before the courts,
we can not make any further comment."
Australian Pensioners and Superannuants League state secretary Yvonne
Zardani said yesterday that more elderly people had reported being
targeted on the state's roads because of the perception they were bad
drivers.
"But we are just the same as everybody else," Ms Zardani said.
Queensland Police Service's 2004-2005 annual statistical review – the
latest available data – shows that there were 2236 reported crimes
against people aged 50 years or older

Yeah.
Hopefully he'll get a cold while in custody, and one of the guards will slip
him a Vicks inhaler mistakenly filled with Zyklon B

I can see how this actually would have happened without the media twist to
it. The bloke would have been waiting for someone to reverse out of a park
and the old woman would have come along at the last moment and stolen his
spot. After explaining this to her in a rude fashion she told him to piss
off, he got mad and gave her a bit of a push not realising the huge effect
it would have. Not the world's smartest thing to do but blown out of
proportion by the media as usual. Good to see everyone here well and truly
jumping on the band wagon too.
He should have just let her tyres down :-)

Irrespective of the real situation, I will always give the benefit of the
doubt to the elderly. They're slow and weak. Finding parking is harder for
them than for the rest of us younger and able-bodied peepz.
Only cowardly arseholes would argue with an elderly on a parking slot.

A MAN accused of bashing a great-grandmother in a fit of car-park rage has
faced court in Brisbane.
Robert James Kenyon, 54, of Windsor in Brisbane's inner north, appeared in
the Brisbane Magistrates Court today charged with the serious assault of a
person over the age of 60 on June 18.
It is alleged Patricia May White, 79, was waiting for a car space at the
Westfield Shopping Centre at Chermside, on Brisbane's northside, when Mr
Kenyon became angered that she was taking it.
He allegedly got out of his car and ordered her to go and find another car
park.
Police claim he then attacked her from behind and she fell on her face,
knocking her out and breaking her nose and ribs.
Mr Kenyon was bailed on his own undertaking and Magistrate John Smith
ordered him to reappear in court on September 9.

Of course he shouldn't have touched her, I think he knows that now. I'm not
defending what he did, just trying to take a level headed view (Imagine that
in aus.cars!!!!!) Have a look at the media beat up, he pushed an old lady,
possibly not even that hard and now he's "A MAN accused of bashing a
great-grandmother in a fit of car-park rage". Try not to let them sucker you
in too much ron.

Stealing peoples car parks should be an offence. The guy pushed an old
lady who was more then likely a rude old bitty anyhow (she stole his
park) for stealing his park its not his fault she hurt herself when she
fell over. hmm would she have fallen if he hadnt pushed her probably
not (but she is old and old people fall over alot.) but would he have
pushed her if she didnt steal his park.

I think the general way it goes is that under no circumstances must you
ever even touch another person without their consent, let alone push
them
over.
IIRC someone once mentioned to me that security guards/police/etc have
to
work within strict rules to arrest/restrain/detain someone. Shane might
know
more about that?

Nice I got the response I was after. The media showed you one side of
this story I just showed it from another. There are two(or more) sides
to every story guys please remember that when
watching/reading/listening to anything including this post.

Wholly shit (no, not a typo). Excuse me for agreeing with Michael C's
first impression, but you're just being 100% reactionary off the media.
You sure he beats his Asian wife? Or does he even have a wife? What did
ACA tell you? Did he push the old lady or did he hold her down and beat
her mercilessly?

Okay sorry for being harsh there, but I tend to get my back up when I
think I'm hearing the media speak through people. And I reckon I heard
it in this thread.

What side was that?
A nice hypothetical one that you pulled out of your arse, or the actual
truth that you witnessed with your own eyes?

There certainly are.
