I would have thought he'd have been older... oh well, RIP Syd.
I often wonder what would have happened had he not left the band... would
we have still seen Meddle, DSOTM, WYWH & Animals (my interest in the band
ends there)?

Weird coincidence re Pulse?
His music was amazing, hopefully it will put Rick, Nick, Roger and David
back in action.
Will be playing all my Barrett stuff in honor today.
Truly Wish you were here.

I left this comment out of my post deliberately but I
certainly made the connection and knew others would.
It would be interesting to find out (for those that harbour
metaphysical theories and the like) at what exact time he
died and who actually bought a copy of Pulse at that same
moment. Maybe it could be worth a few bucks ;-)
Serious mode back on. My personal opinion of Syd is that he
is probably a lot happier now as he was one very tortured
soul with a drug fried brain. I heard a comment this
morning that he used to take "LSD by the shovel full".
For a guy that left a band in 1968 (IIRC) he has certainly
been talked about a lot over the years.

If he had not left, would the world have discovered David Gilmour?
If's buts and maybes. Net result is he was brilliant and so are the rest
of Pink Floyd.
David Gilmour inspired me to learn the Guitar. When that happens you
inevitably look at who inspired them. Thats how I discovered Sid.
It was a serious waste of a life. Even the likes of John Lennon admired
him. He never had the opportunity to really Shine on, like Hendrix I
would love to see what he would be doing now. Such is life.

IMHO a talent like that would have still made it on his own.

Totally agreed.

It was Deep Purple for me, Smoke on the Water, is only 4

The moral to the story is "Don't do drugs." I know it

and as some trivia he would have turned 60 this week as
well.

It's a damn shame so many with talent prostitute them selves for a few

I don't know that I necessarily agree with this. From what I have read over
the years, he had a fragile personality and the combination of the LSD,
pressures of the band's success and hellish touring conditions just burned
him out in those 2 or 3 years.
> I heard a comment this

There seemed to be a lot of that sort of comment this morning - on Radio
National Fran Kelly was describing him as something of a raving drug addict
and was corrected by the biographer she was speaking with who (more or less)
said what I said above...

David Gilmour made that assertion too. His personality was the main
reason for his breakdown, the drugs just fueled it in his opinion.

This is true with all sort of addicts whether it be drugs,
booze or food. The personality trait has to be there first.

But of course ;-) I actually a little surprised he made the
news at all. I would not have thought mainstream media that
would rather talk about a "Turkey Slap" on Big Brother would
have known who Syd was.

Whats a turkey slap?
Actually I was dumbfounded when I saw the news this morning for the same
reason. Behind the news there must be the odd Floyd fan I guess.

A slight exaggeration and doesn't take into account that he was quite
capable of psychological problems without drugs.

Yeah, a perfect situation for a legend to build up over time.

Where do you think their talent came from?
There is nothing wrong with drug use, it has been at the very root of
civilisation the world over since day one. Some just have no self
control, is all.

to use abuse drugs ?
well I wonder why they are considered abusive and made illegal then..
