While I don't agree with what he has done, this article does tend to
lend a little weight to the comments made in the other thread that to
some extent it is a media beat up. There is nothing to justify shoving a
79yo, but the fact that she pushed past him does tend to indicate that
it definitely wasn't an unprovoked attack. Seems like for a moment he
forgot she was old, and simply reacted to him being pushed, just like
you would probably do if it was someone the same age that pushed you. He
didn't leave the scene and his wife comforted her, so obviously when
things went pear shaped he immediately had remorse.
He did the wrong thing, but unlike many he does appear to be prepared to
wear the consequences for what he did wrong.
Just out of curiosity, was it westfield at Indro where this happened?
Last time I was there, an ancient woman cut in front of me (actually she
overtook me as I started to turn in, and damn near hit her) for a park I
was waiting for, and flicked the bird as she went in. A little later
still doing laps looking for a park, I had to wait for her as she
crossed the road with her walker. She yelled out some abuse at me in
language that even a bullocky would cringe at, to the effect that the
elderly had the right to steal car parks from youngen's like me. Chances
of it being the same woman are pretty slim - but you never know.

Westfield, Chermside.
I go there quite a lot.
There are a lot of elderly that shop there and car parking can be
difficult. Westfield are expanding and currently building a multi story
carpark to ease the parking problems.
As the woman is 79, she may not have realised that she took a park he
was waiting for, most of them are a little "Dottie" at that age.
When ever we go there, we take the Sherpa as it will fit in a few
"Creative" parking areas where nothing bigger would fit :-)
I've even had a woman ask if she could buy the car so she could do the
same thing :-)

Perhaps if it was your Mum, or if your Mum had been subjected to some form
of random street violence, your opinion might be very different.
I'm not criticising you per se', but I think it's attitudes like this that
make such behaviour all the more acceptable in our society these days.

if it was my mum id be pissed off. but i wouldnt make constant, repetitive
posts on usenet aobut it.
what exactly is my attitude? that im totally against this sort of behaviour,
but also curious at why one man is pushing it so hard?
i didnt think pushing old women over in car parks was ever considered
acceptable, and frankly i think 99.9% of people would hold the same view.
life produces fruitloops like this, you punish them appropriately and move
on, dont decry them as a paradigm of current society and pine for the good
old days.

a bit of self-righteous rage, I suspect, of the sort that tabloid media like
ACA and TT exploit daily.
She pushed past him? I'd like to know a bit more about that. too much of it
these days, people taking liberties; if women and children do it, why should
they expect a different reaction than if they were men?
People who get all enraged in car parks are idiots though.

No, not really.
I wasn't having a go at Reg-John, but I thought his comments along the lines
of "it happened - get over it" were pretty symbolic of the reasons *why*
this type of shit happens, and why it's becoming more prevalent.
Moral standards seem to be slipping faster than ever, and I think that if
more people reacted over such events rather than simply accepted it as part
of modern society, we'd all be better off.

Interesting take on the matter.
Don't know much about the situation and unlikely to ever find out
either - the press reporting of the matter has been as usual
terminally hopeless. There was 'one' radio report I heard that said
the bearded imbecile simply pushed Grannie in the back. She then
toppled and fell flat on her beak.
Probably close to the truth.
Doesn't excuse the imbecile, though. Have to wonder why no criminal
record though. Perhaps a check of the people he went to school with
would prove interesting.
But I observe and reflect on the ageism thing.
And I come up with the result that most old fart bad behaviour is most
certainly NOT related to their age.
It's more that they've been arseholes all their damm lives and
eventually, it seems some get their come-uppance far too late in life
for the behaviour correction to be socially acceptable, or of any use
to anyone at all:-)
