I am newish to upgrading and am stuck.
I have a video card to fit to my M571 motherboard, but every time I plug it in and turn on the machine, I get a few bleeps (13) and no video out.
I have tried changing jumper 3
I am pretty sure it is because I am not disabling the on-board VGA before I install the new card.
But the appropriate part of the advanced chipset setup in the CMOS settings is 'greyed-out'.
How do I un-grey the CMOS setting to allow me to disable the on-board VGA.
I have seen odd postings referring to dicharging the CMOS ram.
Is this needed?
Or am I on the wrong track altogether?

Are you sure that you are trying to change the correct jumper?
I ask because most manuals on page 14 are labeled incorrectly as jp2
The jumper is immediately to the right of simm2 and disablesor enables the onboard video, once enabled the bios only allows you to allocate from 1-4 meg of system memory for it.

Hmmm.
The jumper I have been changing is at the end of SIMM2.
I put it towards SIMM1 for on-board VGA and towards SIMM3 in the hope of getting plug-in VGA.
JP2 in my manual is between PCI3 and 4.
Page 14 in the manual has jumper settings with JP3 jumpered between pins 1 and 2 for disable internal VGA.
Is this right?
Thanks Steve
To disable on-board vga:
Make sure system is off.
Look at page 6 in the manual and jumper pins 1 and 2 of the 3-pin jumper labeled JP2. Pin 1 is on the left, 2 is middle, 3 is on the right.
Physically install your new vga card in PCI slot 1.
Turn on the system and you should have normal DOS mode video.
It is not uncommon for the BIOS to say the on-board VGA is still enabled. This is nothing to worry about as the SIS5598 automatically disables the on-board VGA if it detects one on the PCI bus. You can verify this by noting if windows finds the new vga card during startup and asks for drivers. Display properties should also indicate which video system windows is using.

Thanks Brad.
In my book, and motherboard, JP2 is near PCI4 and is up and down rather then left and right.
JP3, near SIMM2, is left and right.
So is it JP2 or JP3 on my board that I should be tackling?
If it is JP3, I have tried this and I get no video out of anywhere once the jumper is between pins 1 and 2.
- With or without the VGA card instaled.
I get bios bleeps if the card is installed.
As I get no video out at all, I cannot see is the on-board is enabled or disabled.
Do you know what might be stopping me gaining access to the on-board VGA disable-enable in the CMOS set up page?
Steve Bush
You're welcome. The VGA jumper block is the horizontally aligned 3-pin jumper block closest to the bottom end of SIMM-2 as shown in the manual on page 6 and irrespective of the labeling. Pins are 1-2-3 left to right. Jumper pins 1 and 2 to disable on-board vga.
The 3-pin jumper between PCI 3 and PCI-4 is the CMOS set/clear jumper. Pins 1-2-3 top to bottom. Jumper pins 1 and 2 for normal operation, pins 2 and 3 to clear.

OK
So I have used the on-board video jumper correctly.
What could be stopping me from disabling the on-board video in the CMOS settings.
If the jumper controls access to the CMOS setting, I am in trouble, because I get no video output from any part of my computer as soon as I put the video card in ( I do switch off the computer during installation, and switch it on again afterwards :-).

Sorry to confuse the issue :o I was just stating that my manual on page 14 has the VGA slector labelled as JP2 which is a misprint. I wanted to make sure that you were not looking for JP2
It is JP3 and is next to simm2 on the board.

Yes, you have been setting the correct jumper, JP3 1-2 for disabled. That's all you do, the BIOS is automatic at this point and only a readout indicating it's disabled. If your still not getting any video out of the video card then I would figure you have a bad card or it's not seating properly, hence the beeps and no video output.

Thanks to all of you
I shall try to borrow a known good card and try that.
