Since installing SP2, XP continually updates the desktop. I cannot see
the process that is doing this, but is there a reason for this?

Updates/Refreshes - I have no idea what it is doing, nor why it is doing it.
Every so often the desktop icons flicker.

Maybe your icon cache is too small
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/57/
I also see that Kelly's Corner have a regedit to turn icon refreshing off
and on

Watch out with those bastards. I bought Tweak Manager a few years back with
a 1 year licence, got about 5 months of updates out of it and they didn't
put any others out. They basically told me "nothing you can do about it". I
wouldn't buy from those shonks.

Your computer has been affected by some spyware. It couses the icons to get
shuffled up like a pack of cards every now and then.

Since adding the cache key, it does not appear to be happening anymore.
