View Full Version : Trouble using webcam on Yahoo Chat
Ext User(Neil J)

Hi all
I can use my webcam in most places but not on Yahoo and I can't even view
others cams.
The message I get when i try is "Cannot create webcam viewer control".
I also cannot use Yahoo Messenger and the problem there appears to be that
it doesn't like my proxy settings (i load the program up then I get the grey
sleepy face come up for me - as though I'm offline when I'm logged in - or
at least try to log in)
Optus (broadband) is my ISP so I don't know if there is a gateway issue or
if there is something I just haven't done'
Any clues as to what could be happening?
Ta

Have you opened the ports that Yahoo uses?

According to the Yahoo webam help FAQ
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/chat/webcams/index.html
"In order to use Yahoo! Chat's Webcam feature, your firewall must permit
outgoing TCP connections to webcam.yahoo.com on port 5100.
If you use a proxy server to connect to the Internet, you will not be able
to use the Webcam feature."
There are many more trouble shooting steps at the above url.

Ahhh ... thanks Fred.
Sorry to ask a question which may seem silly - and sorry to be a pain for
asking it ... but how do I do this ? I'm only partly familiar with "proxy
stuff" (just to hightlight my ignorance).....
A good starting point ... is this something I can configure with Optus, or
my browser? Is is something I can address under "my network places" /
"network connections" / LAN setting (I don't know if I'm on the right tram,
but under internet protocol, my settings obtain the IP and DNS
automatically...)
.... or would I be better off buying a lottery ticket ??

The suggestion was that you would need to allow the connection in your
*firewall*
Be it hardware (router) or software (Windows firewall, zone-alarm and etc.)
or maybe none at all ???
Anyhow I suggest that you peruse the linked FAQ as it may provide a
solution.

If ya get it going don't use it as a wank cam
cause the view permission on yahoo doesn't work anymore.
I have a hack to view any yahoo webcam and if I catch ya
I'll post it in here............ ;-O

Why would you want to do that???

It may simply be that your webcam is not supported by Yahoo. Mine isn't.
Go to http://help.yahoo.com/help/au/mesg/webcams/index.html
and look in the Webcam Issues section for "Supported Webcams"
If your cam is not listed (mine is not) it is probably the reason.
If it is supported, there are lots of answers on that page that may help
you.
