View Full Version : Noise from Amplifier

I am hoping some one might be able to give me some suggestions.
I have a Rotel RSP-1066 and a Rotel RMB-1095 hooked up to VAF DC series
speakers.
I have a continual low level buzz which is quite annoying, it is audible all
of the time.
The noise comes out of all speakers, at the same volume, I have tried
switching off all other components, but it is still there.
I have had the amplfier checked recently, as the protection circuitry was
lighting up every now and then - it turns out I was only getting between
205-225 V into the house - Energy Aust. have now fixed this problem, and I
get about 230-240V.
When the amp was in getting checked, I asked them to look at the buzz
problem, but they were unable to duplicate the problem!!
When I got the amp back I moved all of my components and the problem went a
way for a week or so, but has now come back.
I am thinking of getting a Belkin PureAV PF-40 unit which has built in
filtering as well as surge protection.
Do people think this will solve the problem?
Other components in the system:
Foxtel IQ box.
Sony 68Cm TV
Pionner DVD-676 player
Laptop with Wireless networking (not close, and not plugged into same wall
connector)
I have the home theatre end of the house on a seperate circuit on the power
board, and had 2 x 4 gang power sockets installed, but still need a 6
powerboard to help plug everything into - however, the AMP and pre-amp are
plugged directly into wall.
Any ideas would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Jeff

Getting power protection is always a good idea but it sounds as if the amp
needs a good service, could be a small capacitor/resistor on the main board
failing that is causing the online noise, have you tried resetting the amp
at all?
BTW did the vist from Energy Australia cost you anything and did they have
to come and inspect the lines? I'm thinking of doing the same, I'd
appreciate any info.
Cheers

I get this problem a fair bit... Most of the time it can be fixed by running
the amp off a different circuit.
This low level buzz or "humming" usually happens with sub-woofers, and is
commonly refered to as a ground loop. This may or may not be the same
problem but definately give the Belkin a go :)

Italo,
My problem seems to be the Foxtel IQ box.
Specifically the S-Video connection - when this is plugged into the Rotel
amp, a noticeble hum is produced.
I am hoping someone in the newsgroup might be able to suggest a fix for this
problem.
To answer your question, Energy Australia came out for free, and the same
day I called them infact - very good service.
I live down the end of a close, and get the "dregs" of the power.
I have 3 Phase coming to the house, but only use 1 phase of it. One phase
was very low, the other ones were fine, so he simply swapped them over, and
the problem went - in fact when the power came on all my lights were 20%
brighter!!!
The service guy thinks there may be a problem in the street, and Energy
Aust. will come out (I'm not holding my breath!) and look into it.
It is definately woth giving them a call - as if the power fluctates by any
more than 5% (10-12V) then your Energy provider is obliged to fix it by law
(according to the electrician I first called out).
Good luck, and let me know how you go.
Cheers,
Jeff

Hi Jeff and thanks for the further info. Excuse my ignorance, but what do
you mean by 3 phase coming into the house? I've been meaning to call EOz to
get them to check the power supply as I've been getting sporadic problems
with lighting etc...
cheers

From what I under stand our house has 3 phase power coming in from the
street, I'm not an electrician - but we are only using a single phase....
An electrician will be able to explain it better.
Sorry....

This very definitely sounds like an earth loop problem. Google "earth loop"
and check out the very first result that comes up. (It's a pdf at
http://www.jaycar.com.au/images_uploaded/humloop.pdf )

Ok i had exactly the same problem,do you notice it more with foxtell than other imputes?
The problem i had was a resistor in the junction box on the side of your house,it was breaking down and was making a buzzing noise just like yours.
You could try resetting the fox set top box by pressing the select and back buttons at the same time, this worked for a while but always came back .
In the end i got them out but was told if it was my equeptment and not theirs i would be charged for the service call.

I also had a similar buzz after i got a new rotel power amp. My old power amp did not have this issue.
After 2 amp changes and one sunday morning I checked every single connection (pull out check buzz, no buzz, plug back in) and I discovered it was the coaxial cable from my dvd player to the amp. I replaced to coaxial to a optical and the buzz was gone.
