I just want to know if it is possible to upgrade the software on a divx dvd player cos i get the error "unsupported file"

i just want to know as there are more & more different codecs comming out especially the Xvid codec.

Xvid codec has been out for a very long time.
The only way to upgrade is via a firmware upgrade from the manufacturer.
Most manufacturers only release a firmware (if at all) if there is a major bug.
If the file says "unsupported file"....
You might want to grap a copy of "Gspot" and get some information from the file to find out what type it is etc.

XviD has indeed been around for a very long time. Been plenty of updates to it over the years, but with a few exceptions it has always been 100% MPEG-4 spec compliant. That is the whole point of having standards like MPEG-4. You can update the encoder all you want and as long as it follows the specs, then any spec compliant decoder will still decode it.
