Hi all,

I'm not sure if it's already been discussed here but I thought I'd pass
on the message that Pulse by Pink Floyd is now available on DVD in
Melbourne.

Unfortunately it's in 4:3 but you can't have everything.

That's the way it was originally filmed, so no surprises there.

Apparently attempts were made to convert it to 16:9, probably by means
of cropping, stretching, or algorithm, but it didn't work and was
abandoned. And I think this would degraded the image quality even
further, as it is it's not 100%, some scenes are quite grainy and there
are compression artifacts visible in some scenes. But it is an
excellent DVD and much, much better than the VHS - the sound will blow
you away :D

I bought Pulse not knowing it apparently was only 4:3. Watched it and
enjoyed it again, only better on DVD as Floydian wrote. Was telling a friend
it was out and he pointed out that it was a pity it was only only 4:3 to
which I retorted "No it's not" and proceeded to show him it on my Hitachi
Plasma in 16:9. But I had Full screen selected which of course did distort
the picture a little but not really badly , unless you were really looking
for it. And I hadn't noticed. So I'm Happy! It fills the screen and does me
ok.

Mick.

Personally I can't watch 4:3 stretched to 16:9 because peoples' heads
look VERY wrong.

yes, you're quite right, it can be stretched to fill the screen.
I have an LG 106cm plasma and it gives me 3 options: 1. to watch the
dvd in it's original 4:3 format that fits within the 16:9 screen,
leaving black bars on each side. 2. Stretch it out to fill the screen,
as you do, personally i don't like the stretched look and 3. The 'zoom'
mode which fills the screen and keeps the proportions right, but it
means i loose some of the image off the top and bottom of the screen,
and it looks a little grainier because the image is enlarged, but thats
not really a problem.

Sounds like the old "I don't like those black bars" crap from those days
when people didn't want to see a film in the original aspect ratio that
the director produced it in, just so that they can fill their screen up.

Cropping, stretching, or shrinking to suit your display device in a
ratio that is not what the director shot it in is just so unnatural.

In my case on a 4:3 device, I'll watch 16:9 material in letterbox, and
on a 16:9 device I'll watch 4:3 stuff in pillarbox. :)
