Hi all,

Renault recommend I change the 100% synthetic oil in my 2.0l turbo
Megane every 6 months or 10,000kms.

I do about 500kms every week and about 85% of that is on the freeway and
I redline it at least half a dozen times every time I drive it.

Should I consider changing the oil more frequently, such as every 5000
or 7500 kms, or is 10k kms considered minor for synth oil? Or would less
redlining be less damaging than oil change intervals of 10k kms? :)

Personally I'm wary of manufacturers claiming extended oil change
intervals - they don't care about the car once it passes the warranty
period.

Renaults recommended change intervals sound about right to me.
I would only consider changing the oil more frequently if you did some
sustained high speed high revs driving like on a race track.
If you are that concerned keep a sample next time the oil is changed and
get it analyzed.

Don't really think so. The dealer recommended intervals are exactly
that -
to make em $ and cover their arses.

You would have to analyze the condition of the oil for your particular
vehicle and driving habits to really know (and, yes that can be done)

I change me oil every 5,000 however it is a turbo diesel that will foul
up the oil with carbon fairly quicky. Been doing that for 210,000
k's now, however engine does not chew any oil between changes.

That said, the oil after 5,000 is really not a pretty sight.

Have the oil tested and find out. Costs about $20.

The oil companies themselves usually provide the service (as well as a
number of independent labs) but you probably won't get a sampling kit
from a servo. Try ringing the oil company help line if you can't
track one down.

There's normally two tests you can have done. You only need the
cheaper one which should tell you the condition of the oil additives
at the time it's changed. The dearer one is meant for those who keep
close tabs on wear metals.

Thanks to all for the replies.

Call me crazy, but I will get the oil tested.

Let us know how it goes and where you get the kit from - I'd love to
try that myself.
