That was my point. Though the porsches are known for snap oversteer. Earning
them the nickname "idiot killers".

Oh yes...I have the limp and dodgy hip to show for it....
They are very very good until they get to their limit where they
become quite a handful..much worse than you may have experienced in
the wet and at a very much higher corner speed.
To be perfectly honest, they do grip, but when the grip dies, their
handling is well.....positively dangerous.

Interesting perspective.
Should Porsche have an alarm fitted that loudly states that while they
appreciate that they built a car to go this fast around corners, you
have reached the point where the vehicle has become totally
unpredictable and may even with Senna like reflexes be uncatchable.
There are plenty of cars that go as hard as a Porsche but which let
you know that they are reaching their limit and which when that limit
is exceeded are still controllable.

I sure as hell wouldnt want Jeremys GT40, he took the stupid thing back to
FORD as it kept breaking down on him. Wait for a few more episodes and IM
sure he will tell his tale.

Ive driven an older one 85ish, dash like (as Mr Clarkson described it)
sopmeone sneezed the guages on it, seats ripped up carpets fucked, door
trims rooted, paint not the best, but DAMN it was fast, handled well and
even though Im not really a labels man, I want one!!!!
Was just some sort or feeling that stirred within when ya took off in anger.
And the Exhaust tone was great in a tunnel. A nicer unit will do one day but
till then Ill spoil me kids rotten.

PS It was a 911, not the trashy 944 or 928, yuk.
The 911 would be almost plausible to buy for me but if Lotto comes good for
me a 969 will do.

First things first. It's all about the looks. I can happily state that
I could/would NEVER drive any of the first 100 cars on anyones
Favourite Supercar list at anywhere near their limts, and age has
taught me not to try.
So, its down to pure visual lust.
And mine was on Top Gear last night. Not the GT, not the DB9 roadster,
nor those two wannabe sports cars, the TVR and the German thing. (Does
that make the TVR the Russian thing?) Nor, close run though it was, was
the Morgan. Nope my dream was used briefly to intro the two sports
cars.
I want, will kill for, will sell my first born son for, the Austin
Healey 3000. It is just so beautiful, the lines flow, no waisted hang
ons or extras. What's the drive train or running gear like? The
handling? The suspension? Who cares! Just give me the Healey, a warm
spring day and the Great Ocean Rd. At the end of it, call St Peter and
tell him I'm ready, there is nothing else to live for.
Sigh. When is the next Lotto draw?

Funnily enough my dream car was one of the cars they had on the set.
Austin Healeys like the one on the show are IMO one of the best looking
cars ever made and they were relatively quick in their day.
If you want a pure sportscar you can't go past a Lotus 7 replica,
fantastic handling with modern Japanese mechanicals make for reasonably
cheap fun driving.
Anyone whose dream car is a tarted up taxi needs urgent medical help as
their imagination has gone into limp home mode:-)

Agreed, one of those would be very high on my list.
A bloke in Melton has a Roaring Forties GT40 which cost him $85,000, a
seriously nice looking car that will do 300kph (tested at Avalon airfield).

A mates boss owns one (he owns Tullamarine Bus Lines in Melb), for some
reason the ECU had to be replaced, a new one was $14,000 and that was
over 10 yrs ago.

No doubt it is a fine car but not something an enthusiast would get

Cool. That's how much I'd *expect* a supercar's brain to cost. :)

Jeez, that's a *very* big call :)
911 type Porsche's have their own individual handling characteristics that
can probably best be described as "quick & deadly". They certainly do handle
very well, but unlike a lot of other exotica when they let go they do it
*awfully* quickly, and often give the driver very little time to gather it
up.
There's been *plenty* of world class drivers who have stuck Porsches into
the woods on perfect roads.

I agree, and it's one of the major differences between just about any
Porsche and any Ferrari (well, of the ones I've driven anyway).
Most Ferrari's might resemble a Meccano set with most of the bits missing
compared to a Porsche when it comes to build quality, but the driving
experience is a completely different story. When driven on the edge, most
Ferrari's are an absolute fucking orgasm on wheels, whereas a Porsche is
looking for a tree to wrap you around.

So long as you don't want to drive it!
I recall the Healey Six as being an absolute shit heap on the road.
Ultra soft suspension obviously designed for the US market... one of
the few cars I've ever driven that wound up its rear springs on a
normal take off.
Sluggish and heavy as well (even for its era)... little wonder they
didn't sell many.
