View Full Version : Why have all my remotes gone haywire?

Earlier this week all my remotes went stupid simultaneously. The audio
remote continued raising or lowering the volume after the button had been
released or wouldn't operate any functions whatsoever. The PVR responded
extremely slowly or not at all to any commands. The STB would turn on for a
few seconds then go off. The TV also refused to respond. Fortunately, the
equipment worked without the remotes but of course some functions are simply
not accessible without the remote. Then about 36 hours later all the
remotes returned to their previous state. I've ruled out the batteries and
I've ruled out the kids dropping the remotes. So what would cause this? Is
it something like 'dirty' power? Some form of interference (I even moved
the Harmony 520 that I'd been experimenting with out of the room just in
case)? Any suggestions?

Flouro lights can do this

Thanks Shaw. Only flouros are in the kitchen (bench lighting) which is a
fair way from the TV. There are however lots of new 50w downlights - could
these be implicated in the problem? However this is not a continuing
problem, suggesting some sort of occasional source?

Are there any compact fluoros used in the downlights? Or anywhere in line of
sight?
I've had serious problems with some of those in the past.

Well there are those skinny fluoro tubes used behind the kitchen cupboards
to light the benchtop. These were installed about 3 months ago when we put
in a new kitchen and are about 8 metres away. But I think you mean those
energy-saving fluoros that substitute for conventional bulbs? Haven't put
any new ones in . I'm interested in why a compact fluoro would cause a
problem and if so why it would only be occasional? Is the problem always
temporary? Is there any workaround other than replacing the bulb?

Yeah, same with the compact fluoro though it seems to be more of a
problem while it is still warming up. Once at full intensity the remote
seems ok....

Well, if you read nick's post he mentions he's had some that cause problems
until they warm up.
In my case I bought some cheapies at Bunnings, and nothing worked in that
room while they
were turned on.
Your problem may, of course, be something totally different. Worth checking
to see
which lights or appliances are on when you have the problem again.

Nah, not on all four of them simultaneously! Looks like the fluoros are not
the culprit in my case - very puzzling

Are they known to cause interference with remotes?
