Don't get too excited. There are two firmwares dated 5th August 2006 at the galas website. One is for players with serial numbers smaller than a certain number, and the other for players with larger serial numbers. I've tried both - the wrong one didn't work, the right one did. I tried the wrong one second, because the "right" one didn't solve the dts problem (i.e. no dts passthrough), and it WAS supposed to. "Galas" or should it be "Galahs"?

The "Your questions" section at the website now has a question/answer:

Q. Omni DX-4300 DTS Digital Output Not Enabled
A. Download the firmware update files under Support >> Downloads, MP3 Updates section.
Check your serial No. range before downloading.
Follow the instruction on the inside.

The new menu looks the same as the old and there is no mention of dts. There is no correction page for the P.15 Downmix setup, where the text does not match the printed menu or the real one.

You wonder why they would bother putting the firmware on their webpage without trying it first. This problem has been around since last year and I certainly won't buy anything with the Omni logo again, or anything distributed by these Galahs.

This player was never meant to have DTS output (it was added into the specifications in error) and they have been trying to get the factory responsible to sort out it, I know they have been having a bit of a battle getting it done too, doesn't help your situation I know:)

Hold on. The Mediatek chipset is used in other players which allow dts passthrough. DD is passed fine. On page 6 of the manual, the LED display includes the dts symbol. The dts LED comes on when a dts dvd is put in. dts passthrough was in every internet advertisement I saw for the DX-4300. That's the reason I bought it. Galas aren't trying very hard or being very honest - I've spent a lot of time on the phone with one of their Galahs, and I'm not very impressed. All that's happened over several months is that they've removed from their question and answer list an answer which showed they had no understanding of the problem, and replaced it with a new question and answer, and with downloads of what looks like original firmware which are supposed to solve the problem, but which don't. They didn't contact me despite my long history of calling them about the problem. They should just withdraw the product and admit their mistakes.

There's no need to withdraw the product, there are none left anyway, if DTS passthough is the reason you bought it and it was incorrectly advertised then take it back and get a refund.

Too late unfortunately.

... I tried the wrong one second, ....
That was very brave of you....
Putting the wrong firmware on a player can quickly turn it into a brick.
(or has this happened?)

No. They've used two different drives - early serial numbers used Sanyo and later Hitachi. With the same innards I figured it was worth the risk, and a thread on other forum
http://board.softpedia.com/index.php?showtopic=439&st=40
minimises the risk anyway. The dx-4300 now works the same as it always did. Decent features except for the dts-passthrough I expected.

sorry guys, I know this is off topic but would appreciate an answer even if it's 'i don't know'.

Will this DVD play Nero INCD xvids on a dvd+rw?

I wouldn't think so. I would be very surprised if any dvd player would. However, standard xvids play properly on dvd+rw's written by Nero (Burning Rom).
P.S. Uninstall Nero-INCD or anything like it, including the Windows equivalent. It's much safer to burn dvd's properly using Nero Burning Rom or one of the many other burning programs.
