Hi, i'm looking for a decent news server as optus's ng retention sucks!
I post pictures to a couple of binary ng's, & quite often do not see all
the responses. Also I see a lot of responses to other posts, but don't
get the original post!

So what do ppl here recommend & use? I have checked out a couple of
sites, but they are all overseas & i'm not too sure what is good value
for money.

Any help/advice much apprec.....

See what news feed your ISP has then work into that.

eg if your ISP is say XYZ which gets there feed from "Telco" then you
should be able to get the "Telco" news feed direct.

See if you can find, as your coming through these news servers.

news.uwa.edu.au
nnrp.waia.asn.au

I think maxwell - look that up and get the correct link. One of these
should work.

news-read1.maxwell.syr.edu
news-read2.maxwell.syr.edu
news.maxwell.syr.edu
dp.news.maxwell.syr.edu

or another suggestion does OPtus have a users forum - you may get a clue
from there, what others are using.

There are news servers available without paying.

Probably a good idea to visit the following newsgroups to get a better
idea of what is available.

alt.binaries.news-server-comparison
alt.free.newsservers

I purchased an 8 gigabyte block account for US $7.95 from Octanews.
Block accounts aren't a bad idea, you pay for them up front and there
is no further cost until you use up your quota and need to renew.
If most of the newsgroups you frequent are just text groups a block
account could last for years.

Thanks Ted, I will check this one out. Its a binary group that I post
to, but there aren't that many posts per day on it, so an 8gb plan would
last a while!

I use x-privat.org. It seems to be good, but it's slow, given the
connection between here and Italy. Another, news.individual.net in
Germany is also good. But these two require a paid subscription for
access to their better services.

I'm not sure what their binary services are like, as I don't subscribe
to them.

Based on my current usage, an 8 gig block would last me probably 41
years...

I'f I'm still around then and still posting and reading Usenet
(presuming that it will be around in 40 years time), then maybe I SHOULD
be forcibly euthanised...

Are the servers based in the US? I'm currently an x-privat.org
subscriber. It's in Europe, Italy, I think and can be fucking
treacle-like with downloads (and I'm on an ADSL2+ connection). I'd
consider Octanews if the speeds were better and if it has the same level
of retention and complete threads, as well as all the aus.* and other
Australian based newsgroups, in particular, melb.general.

You should try Octanews Emjaye. Not for reading but for access to the
binaries groups. After reading post of Ted Wishart a few days ago I signed
up for 8GB block to try it out and it's brilliant. Download our favourite
weekly viewings at around 5Mbps via alt.binaries groups and via a SSL
connection as well. Beats the hell out of BT and makes good use of ADSL2+
speed. Email me if you want to know more.

LOL.
You don't download much in the way of binaries then. :-)

Octanews is in the US and carries all the aus* groups including
melb.general.
The owner, Mike Horwath frequents the two newsgroups I mentioned
earlier as well as the Octanews internal newsgroups, following a
request he willingly adds any newsgroups Octanews isn't currently
carrying.

The German news service NIN has a good reputation, it has text only
and no binaries, Annual fee of 10 EUR http://news.individual.net/

Just signed up. And as luck would have it, I've just been shaped. From
16,000 kbits down to 64 kbits....

Don't reset til 1st Sept. Wish WB would hurry up and get its new plans
up and running (extra data blocks, etc.).

Already done. According to the support blurb, though, it says that in
order to connect to the news server, just to configure for normal
password and username on news.octanews.com.

None at all. Just news from about a dozen aus.* newsgroups.
