View Full Version : Tyre suggestions

G'day,
Just after suggestions for decent tyres for a V8 Commode Wagon (VN).
Currently running Federal Super Steel on the rear and Sava "Instensa" on
the front in 215/60/15.
Seems noisy as hell on all corners and rear grip is fucking atrocious
wet or dry. Tends to bounce around a bit too on rough-ish surfaces.
Also thoughts on "Chaser" rims being a worthwhile improvement?
Currently has what look to be Calais rims from a VL (most likely
steelies). Have the opportunity to buy a set with brand new Pirelli
P6000s for a decent price but I've heard mixed reports about the P6000s.
I'd rather spend decent dosh on decent grip.
Cheers,
Andy. (The other Andy.)

Oh yeah
nuthin spells "Bogan" more than a VN with pursuit rims
get a nice set of "Australian Made" alloys in 16x7 or 17x7 inch and some
good tyres
as for tyres I now run Falkens and they are very good in the wet and dry
and no where near as noisy as the NanKangs that were on it

There are P6000's and P6000's.
215/60R15 P6000's are available in both V & W ratings (Pirelli codes
1282900 & 0856300). W's are around 2½ times the price of V's.
You tend to get pretty much what you pay for.
The last set of V rated P6000's on my VN weren't anything to write
home about. Apart from being harsh and noisy they're far more
susceptible to stone and pothole damage than decent tyres oughta be (I
had to replace two out of the four from blowouts on country roads).
I'm currently tending towards Chinese made GT Radial GTX's, which are
a similar tread pattern to P6000's except they're a directional
pattern (which should give better grip in the wet). You'll find them
here....
http://www.tyres4u.co.nz/mainpage.aspx?FR=1&PID=2&DID=76&MID=19
They've also done well on my work ute, albeit in a different size and
tread pattern. The construction quality looks to be a lot better than
V rated Pirellis. Price is similar.

If it weren't for present day policing I'd still be running
Michelins... whether they're worth the extra money outside the NT is
something else again. :)
They're also a heap cheaper than W rated P6000's.

**I purchased a set of P6000s (65 profile) for my VP around 3 months ago.
They're excellent. Quiet, good handling (wet and dry) and nice riding.
Highly recommended.

I know that the vehicle differs (V6 626) but last year we bought some cheapo
tyres (205/55-15s)due to finances being tight and bald tyres arent a good
feel.
They cost $82 each, they are directional and non-silica.
Apart from a harsh road noise they actually handle real well, gave them a
bit of a test the other day and they hung on pretty damn well for the costs.
So far the wear hasnt been an issue but I often wonder if the $400/corner
tyres are THAT much better. I know that almost everyone agrees that the
dearer tyres are better but Ive had bloody expensive rubber when I needed it
but found that there wasnt a huge difference unless the vehicles pushed way
beyond its normal (Intended) driving style anyway.

Heh...was more interested in the (possible) weight saving factor from
the chasers, couldn't really care less what the wheels look like, bogan
factor or not. Plus they go for about $50 a set. Have heard about
certain BMW wheels that are look-a-likes and are even lighter, don't
know if they're still commonly available or not.
Cheers,
Andy. (The other Andy.)

I had a set of Vredesteins on my FWD Astra SRi. Cost $200 each (16 inch
wheels) and lasted only 30k kms. $250 Michelins gripped better in the
wet and dry and lasted 70k kms.
Recommended the same Michelins to a friend who has a (RWD no?) Lexus
IS200. He found them noisy and not particularly long lasting so he went
back to Bridgestone Potenzas.
His car weighd 200 kgs more than mine and obviously had different
factory alignment settings, so works well on one car wont always work
well on another car.

If they're VL Calais rims, they'll be alloys - chaser rims may well
weigh more.
I've had a set of Bridgestone Potenza GIII for a couple of months now
and find them very hard to fault. No grip issues whatsoever so far -
haven't pushed them to the limit but I'm finding that there's plenty of
grip and no signs of slippage even when cornering enthusiastically -
and not too noisy either.

I got them for zilch,( slightly used) came off an imported wheel and the
tyre fitter hit me a carton to fit them :)
they are ok for the price.

sounds like you have a problem which may be 20% tyres and 80% fucked

Nah...shoulda been clearer I guess. Tyres bounce/skip I guess you'd
call it on little bumpy sections, they feel like they're a really hard
compound.

The missus is happy with new Goodyear Arriva (sp) on her FWD Pintara. It
would slide about badly at the rear even in the dry with RE92
Bridgestones. Reports are all positive from her, even in the recent rain.
As a passenger the improvement is very noticable and they are
surprisingly quiet. Not real expensive either.
