My Golf GTI currently has 205/55 R16 wheels on a 16x6.5 inch rim.
I've found some 18x8 wheels and was wondering what size tyre would be best?
Thanks,
Peter

Also! I'm in NSW. Does anyone know where to find the RTA rules on wheel
sizes? I've checked the website, but I can't find anything!
My tyre placard lists 17x7, so I can go up to 19x8 right? Not that I would!

Have you seen the price of tyres for 18 inch rims?
Anyway, you'll be wanting 235/40/18. Will cost at least $325/corner for
something that will grip really well, but if you just tootle about, you
could be happy with the Hankooks. I've got the Dunlop SP SPort MAXXs on
my Megane and it looks like I'll be lucky to get over 30k kms out of
them with the way I drive, and 85% of that is on the freeway.
Here's some quotes I got recently:
Falken ZE326 $255
Hankook K104 $270
Dunlop 3000A $300
Dunlop SP SPort MAXX $325 - $410
Bridgestone RE040 $430
Yokohama AVS ES100 $365 - $408
Yokohama V550 $370
Michelin Preceda PP2 $337
Michelin Pilot Sport $678
Contintental ContiSport (fitted to MkV GTIs) $485

Good choice. That'll probably make his speedo more accurate too at 10
less revolutions per km.

But yeah, "ouch" (both dollars and ride).

205/55R16's aren't much cheaper! My tyres have cost been $250 and $440.
It's not a common profile.
Thanks for all your help Ben. Someone else has suggested 225/40/18's.
That's the standard VW size for a 7.5 inch rim.
Would they be too narrow for an 8?
Thanks!

I used to pay $250 for Michelin Precedas on 205/50/16. The Pilot Sports
would have been closer to $500.

No idea. It would probably depend on the specific rim and tyre. You
would have to consult a tyre fitter.

Thanks for the info!
My 16's aren't worth the freight costs sorry!
