Anyone driven one of these? Was thinking about one for the wife now we have a kid. Any other good alternatives? What about Corolla?
All opinions welcome - cheers.

Not a bad drive despite what those here who have never even seen one
might think....Oh and I noticed somewhere last week that they have the
best retained value after 3 years than any other wagon.
Still, YOU should take a look.

The Corolla's are pretty good cars actually compared to the Lancer they are
an excellent car. Have you looked at an Astra wagon or what about a second
hand Subaru Liberty wagon or an Impreza Hatch.
Here is a road test of the Lancer wagon.
http://autospeed.drive.com.au/cms/A_2979/article.html
I would look for a 2nd hand Liberty wagon imho.

They are exceptionally good value when you consider how much power they have
(2.4L 115 kW) for the buck. However, they are pricey. If engine power is
not a concern then I would look seriously at the Holden Viva wagon, which is
$3,000 less expensive and has standard side airbags.

Astra Wagon would probably be my pick in that category, and I've found
that the Viva Wagon has a surprisingly good amount of interior space
and is very well priced. Main problem with it is lack of cruise
control.
Alternatively, one of the big local wagons on gas, say a 1-2 year old
one, would probably cost the same money or less and might work out even
better.

I've driven recent versions of both, and while the Corolla didn't exactly
impress me it's light-years ahead of the Lancer in the quality stakes. The
Lancer remains one of the cheapest, tinniest poorly built cars available in
the country, and it has been from day one.

Depending on the budget but check out the Impreza 2.0R Hatch, AWD and
lots more power than a Corolla but also a lot more expensive.
Handles unbelievably well but needs PULP and uses more fuel.
Good deals can be had on 06 models as the 07 is due soon.

Noddy, last time we spoke about Lancers, you didn't know which sedan
you'd driven.......didn't you also think that the EVO is just a
standard Lancer with a few bits added?

Corolla wagon.....

Ahhh, now all the anti Mitsu clowns can have a field day pretending
that they actually know something about the Lancer wagon.
I'd suggest you have a look and make your own decisions.

Um, Oz, that's just bullshit, and I'm calling you on it.
I said the Lancer I'd driven was the current one, but I didn't know what
*engine* it had in it. As far as the Evo goes, all I've ever said is that it
looks like a Lancer to me, and I made no comments at all about it being a
"Lancer with a few bits".
Thanks for trying to refresh my memory, but I don't need it tainted with
your triple diamond bent.

And of course, you're a fucking world authority on them, right?

I think that would be a good idea.
However, I'd add that I wouldn't limit my short list to the Lancer or the
Corolla.

Just one problem - Toyota discontinued production of the Corolla wagon last
month. So only two small wagon choices remain: Viva or Lancer.

Have you seen the standard Astra wagon with the body-colored B and C pillars
and black plastic exterior trim - *not* a pretty looking thing. You have to
pay more to get the blacked out pillars and body colored fittings.

Yep, that's right...It was a sedan....and you didn't know which one it
was other than it was "recent" not current.

Yep, correct again.
You assumed it was a "normal" Lancer body with some stiffening, and
that the engine must have some 'serous stiffening' or words to that
effect.
