I finally found a couple of LPG tanks that would be ideal for my bus.

Pickup only in bloody VIC. What a load of crap. :-(

He does offer to take them to any nearby transport depot and he's not
all that far from Dandenong where a huge amount of transport co's are
located.

Don't think they will except unless IIRC purged with nitrogen gas as
it can't legally be carted about in a closed truck. Open pickup truck,
however not an enclosed space. If found a company that had open
load area trucks, could not see a problem with that.

Can't see what you are whinging about, they are 300 each, hard to get and if
you can find them they will be expensive,
what's wrong with taking a drive down to pick them up ??

I don't quite follow your (il)logic here. You're complaining that the seller
hasn't organised freight but you're not willing to do it yourself? Surely
having it pickup is a good thing as it keeps the price down and you can
organise freight yourself.

Organising freight from the receiver's end can be a huge pain in the arse.
Especially if the seller is not very helpful with regard to packaging for
transport and/or meeting whoever has to collect the items. Most transport
companies want their freight packaged and ready to go in the *exact*
dimensions you were quoted on, and will spent around three seconds helping
you if the package isn't as expected when they arrive to collect it before
they drive off and bail out of the job.

If the seller is prepared to package items in a manner that most transport
companies are happy to accept (and in this particular case it would most
likely be strapped to a pallet), then that makes it a shitload easier.
However, if they can't or won't do that, trying to get a transport company
to do it for you can be a fucking uber expensive nightmare.

Looking at the ad on ebay, the seller has stated that he would be
prepared to deliver them to a depot as long as it's not too far from him.

Yeah, I did notice that, and that's better than what some are prepared to
do.

They'd still need to be "packaged" for shipment, and getting a transport
company to do that can depend on a lot of things. It can also be hideously
expensive. I remember once getting a quote on having a roughly one metre
square neon sign packed for shipping from Melbourne to Hobart, and the
"packing fee" was 3 times the price of the actual shipping :)

Problem solved. The last part applies. What a load of crap.

Asked for some info. The tanks are actually about half the size
claimed (180L usable each), valving would all need replacing, brackets
are not LPG tank brackets but petrol/diesel brackets that don't comply
for LPG tanks.

All in all, a complete waste of time.

Ah, the ebay experience.

It can be great, and it can also be a load of old cods :)

Asking the right questions can be very useful...

I asked for tank diameter and length, water capacity and last test date
from the plates, whether the valving on both was the same (there was a
photo of one showing a direct fill and no service solenoid) and how full
they were.

"X581 Rheem wc224kg as1210.1 tp3.3mpa Vic V625.79 tare 83.4kg 11/86"

and

"X322 wc 221kg as1210/1 tp 3.3 VicV625779 tare 83.5kg 8/80"

So we have water capacities of 224kg and 221kg, useable of about 178L,
(so much for the claimed 300L each) and tanks that went out of test in
'96 and '90 respectively. Actually probably went out in '91 and '85
because it was 5-year tests back then.

I wouldn't consider buying such tanks unless they were already passed
for retest _and_ fitted with remote-fill type AFLs or they were within
half an hour's drive and cost less than $50 the pair. What's 160kg of
decent scrap steel worth these days?

"I will be honest with you the questions you asked I have no idea what
you are talking about."

Had to laugh at that!

Less than the petrol you'd use to cash it in :)

Add another seller to the blacklist :)
