Bloody hell, I was confused just watching the video:-)
I assume the lever closest to the driver is the main gear lever and the
other lever is a range changer.
We sure get it good these days compared to 30 yrs ago.

A 2-stick Mack only got complicated when you had a big load and had to
shift both boxes at the same time - knee to jam wheel and one arm
through the wheel, the other outside.

The one in the You-Tube show was clearly Bobtail as even with an empty
trailer you needed Low-Low, if not Low-Low_Compound-Low to lift off,
and thereafter the two sticks were always in opposition, i.e. one
forward and the other back (and vice-versa of course), the one on
You-tube is skipping three gears every change, hence the sticks going
in the same direction frequently.

A "B" model with a load on would change gear 14 times from the dock to
the front gate, and when you inevitable cocked it all up - usually
somewhere embarrassing like 1/2 way up a hill, the best thing to do was
to stick everything in neutral, wait till it stopped and try again.

Truthfully it would be 20 years since I tried on , I know it wasn't
hard once worked out except as you say having a prehensile dick to hold
the wheel was handy , now I go and stop with everything in D

Spicer used to have a 24 speed box, 1 lever and a multitude of
knobs which had the nasty habit of neutralising the gearbox at the
most in opportune moments.

Mind you I also remember driving a prototype Isuzu with a Road Ranger
13 speed in it which would also go eerily silent on rough downhill
runs as it bounced out of gear when the cab moved beyond the
limits of the gear lever. One telex to Japan and 48 hours later Isuzu
provided the fix, which is more than can be said for Mercedes who
had the same problem for years.

Indeed but I suppose if you got the knack of it it would be simple as taking
a shit. :-)

looks like the right hand gearstick is the full gears, the left hand its a
3or 4 way splitter on each gate of the main gears. probably either took
directions from the spicer, or the spcier came after this one. quite
similar.

I overheard a couple of older truckies talking about Spicer gearboxes, I
don't think any of them were sad that Spicer boxes aren't around any more:-)

The driver didn't seem to having any trouble shifting gears, I wonder
how long it took him to learn:-)

Makes the 16spd synco ZF box in the DAF look like childs play.

Lotta years ago I had to deliver a white , v16 with a 5 x 4 x 2
combination all off one gear stick . I didn't break it but was very
happy to catch public transport back.

You don't split 5th gear in a quad box, it is only a quarter gear over
4th. He could be loaded, certainly more than bobtail, it is after all a
3.5 minute clip. There were no compound shifts (two sticks at once) and
the evidence is not clear as to why he down shifted. Maybe it was to
show off. When he gets good at it send me another clip."

Eh?

Where and how did I "misquote" you?

Unless I used a message of yours simply to pick up the subject line and
accidently left the "atec77 # wrote" line in.

If I did that, I apologise - it was unintentional.

the Mack Quantum I was driving last year was a bitch on a steep hill
with a B/Double set
you take off in lo/lo and then try to change to 1st but the cab would
drop foward, so far forward that the gearlever would hit the floor
cutout and not engage the gear, so you had to either crawl up through
the Mains Rd/ Kessels Rd lights at Mt Gravatt in lo or ride the clutch
in 1st
much easier if you can roll up to the lights and not stop

I know an old driver around Brisbane who drives an old yellow
Superliner(the old shell dark yellow) with the 500hp V8
it's got the Mack 12 speed and a 3 speed spicer joey behind it
with a full load of gravel and a single trailer from a standing start he
moved the gear lever once
the rest were just the air switches on the gear lever

I owned one of those - the guy is a bit slow tho. 4 speed "H" main box with 3 speed (reverse
little "h") splitter (under/direct/over) - 12 speed forward and 3 reverse). Split changes are
quicker using *both* hand (one arm through to s/wheel spokes)

I guess you never got to drive Albion's or maybe an old Commer or Morris ?
now you earned your money in those horrible little cans
