I am considering buying a 1986 Gemini as a first car for my daughter,
and I was wondering if it is a non-interference motor?

It has a broken cam belt, but is spotless otherwise, and if all it
requires is a new belt, then $200 seems to be a good price.
It doesn't seem to have bent valves - just no compression.

Thanks,
DH

"Non-interference" ?

Are you asking what it is, or giving a tentative answer?

In an interference engine, the valves can physically contact the
pistons if they get out of synchronization. A piston at
top-dead-centre will interfere with a fully open valve.
Because of the inertia in an engine that's turning, this will
bend valves at the very least.

A non-interference engine can spin without damage while the
valve train and pistons are in any rotational relationship with
each other.

A timing belt failure in an interference engine is a cause for
great financial grief.

I owned a 1985 model a few years ago and I seem to remember that it is
an interference engine - but I don't have first hand experience of a
cam belt breaking.

A quick search on "Isuzu 4XC1 interference" found this link that
suggests it is:
http://www.preferredcomponents.com/isuzu.htm

Depending on how much it would cost you to fix, for the next-to-nothing
you are getting it for it would seem to be a good buy. Mine didn't
give me a lot of trouble in the four years that I owned it.

Incidentally, belt driven cam interference engine designs are something
that car salesmen will ALWAYS lie about.
Service managers will 'often' lie about it.

Most wouldn't have a clue what you are talking about most likely.

A lot of them wouldn't have a clue either.

Agreed.

Most would have trouble telling you what colour a car is available in
without looking it up in the factory brochure, let alone be able to provide
detailed information about the engine.

The most successful car salesman I ever met knew absolutely *nothing* at all
about the cars he was selling, other than who made them. His ability to sell
the things had very little to do with his product knowledge, and everything
to do with his ability to be able to bullshit the leg off a butcher's table
at will.

He was a remarkable speaker who could converse at length about any random
subject you threw at him, and this ability allowed him to sell 101 cars in
his best month :)

There's quite a few older cars around that are still in ok condition, and they are dirt cheap. I'd just move on and look for something that doesn't need work.

Even though the dealer principal was over the moon, I bet he hated writing
out his commission cheque that month :)

Oddly enough I've seen a lot more 380's on the road than VE's, so far
I've only seen 4 VE's which isn't many when you consider I spent my day
driving all over Melb., they must be selling them all interstate because
they aren't selling many in Melb.
The VE I saw today was an SS which looks a hell of a lot nicer than the
Omega.

It does indeed the Omega is very plain jane I would think maybe some better
wheels on it would make it look a bit better.

I think the SS is the best of the whole lot really in the looks.

In the last week I've seen a heap of VE's(in south-east Melbourne),
especially SS's, even saw a HSV GTS yesterday! Maybe it's just taken a
while for dealers to get hold of them?
