View Full Version : Bleeding Common-Rail Diesel Engine

Just changed the fuel filter on the Mercedes Vito. Filled up filter
with new diesel as much as possible.
I have read that common-rail diesels done need to be bled. The fuel
filter has what looks to be a bleeding screw though....
I have tried starting the van but after over a minute of trying to
start it, nothing is going...

Any tips/ideas?

Is there a manually operated fuel priming pump?
If so bleed the fuel system.
Do you have the owners manual, most likely it will contain instructions
on how to bleed the system.

Can't really help you with that - I can't understand it would be a
problem though. Surely like my ToyCo diesel that bleeds itself,
ie: if it runs out of fuel, it will prime itself. It is always flowing
fuel
within the injection pump and back to the fuel tank.

The only bleeding screw I can think of on me 'lux filter is
the water drain located at the bottom of the fuel filter setup.

RTFM, or Google might be a good thing at this moment.

common rails shouln't need bleeding as they are electic fuel pumps but if
its has a manual priming pump normal located on the injector pump or on top
of the filter just pump till it goes hard then a few more pumps and start
car if still wont start pump the pump while some one keys over the engine
every couple of minutes till it starts

finally got it going... killed the battery turning it over, but after a
jump and etc...got it going

Yay!, yeah it might take a time, however high pressure
diesel fuel needs to be present.

Pretty much what I expected. Did you really fill up
the filter though?
