View Full Version : Hit roo #3

What was that about things happening in threes? Hit a third 'roo last
night while driving my wife home from work - most unexpectedly, in the
middle of the suburbs rather than approaching the outskirts of town
which is where I hit the other two a year or two ago. As usual, the
thing bounded out of the trees at the side of the road and appeared in
my peripheral vision about half a second before I hit it, only just
giving me time to hit the brakes.
(For those that know Canberra, this was on Hindmarsh Drive near
Canberra Hospital, just near Swinger Hill on the way towards Woden Town
Centre).
Unlike the other two, this one did some damage to the car - tennis ball
sized dent in the bonnet that will need panelbeating attention, and
bent the front number plate.
Also unlike the other two, this time the roo didn't bugger off after
the hit, but keeled over on the median strip. Called the ranger and
they took care of it - don't ask me what they did as I left when they
arrived.

I've hit a roo just up the road from there, a few years ago. Bloody roos are everywhere around Canberra at the moment.

You're lucky - the last few I have been close to have done a lot more damage
- Last year No2 son - about $6000 - all driver's side panels plus bonnet
and headlight; two months ago, same car, headlight, mudguard, door, bonnet,
write off (just, - value a lot lower); last year, myself, not yet repaired
hit behind the LH back wheel while doing about 30km/hr - I didn't even see
him, repair estimate $600, but $500 excess, my niece, a month ago,
estimated "in excess of $10,000" (near new Falcon), six weeks wait on
panelbeater due to too much work with roo damage.

Yeah. Around Tuggeranong, especially.
I see them on Drakeford Drive all the time, and I saw one briefly enter
the Hyperdome car park a few months ago.

I live at Jerrabomberra, and the damn things are everywhere out there. We live across from a reserve area, and some nights they come and eat our front lawn (and leave roo crap full of weed seeds - little bastards).

Never hit a roo yet, been lucky I guess as I make semi-regular trips
out to country NSW (Grenfell). I hope if it does happen I'm in the
Valiant and not the Accent.....
Anyway, every now and then we see a roo near here, he just stands on
the side of the road not moving. Even when you drive past him,
nothing. I'm starting to suspect it's a fake roo that someone puts out
every now and then in different locations for a laugh.....

The way my upper back/neck is behaving ATM (fecking hurts)
from sleeping at a mates place on a mattress on the floor with
a single pillow that ended up being being put over head to
block noise, rather than under - I'll take the hit by a bull bar
option.
the_dawggie_in_"ouch_dont_ask_me_to_tilt_back_head_mode"
I'll keep me bull bar though. Ban sleeping on a floor on a thin
matresss with a single pillow in a partly noisy environment :-(

I didn't realise that having a bull bar and having a decent bed to
sleep in were mutually exclusive! That's a trap for young players
right there. Glad I bought the comfy bed.

They are getting really active in spring. I see new dead ones next to (or
bloody well ON) Captain's Flat road every day. The ones left in the middle
are interesting, especially for the idiot tailgating me the other evening.
heh. I went round it, but he didn't! Suck rocks.
I hit one a month back, and it was an offset hit as I was in avoidance mode.
But he's made my bullbar a bit skewif now, bent the side of it, and a great
chunk of my plastic bumper is also cut loose. Stupid roo. He nicked off but
I suspect he was quite injured.
it's sad to see the very small ones, inexperienced and they never had a
chance.

I had one blunder into the side of me once. Made a hell of a noise, but
there was no damage! Vitey's metal is so thin, it just sprang back.

It must've been that very narrow window between pissed-but-not-funny and
