Has anyone read the article titled "Copying DVDs with your CD Writer/DVD reader" on www.justcdr.fr.fm?
It claims that you can burn DVD discs in a normal CD-R drive using the latest version of Nero with a "DVD-copy" option enabled.
It's probably crap.... just wondering if anyone has tried it.

The article writer's source got it wrong.
The guy thought he had a CDR, but it's actually a DVD-R/CD-R drive! He was burning DVD to DVD!
What a moron!
The article is bogus, it cannot be done, dont waste your time visiting the site. Anyone who would believe such a story is a fool.
Come on, GBs of data being burned to an 800MB CD? I think not.
Dvdude..you are half right. I have read up on this to find that you can copy DVDs to CD-R but there are several severe drawbacks, and they all revolve around your point about the fitting gigabites of info on an 800 meg CDR.
At minimum you need a DVD-ROM, there is no way around that. Then you get the software they are offering to copy to CD-R. Now even the most basic of movies is going to require at least 2 CD-Rs and if you include any extras, up to 6 CD-Rs to copy one heavily laden DVD. I think from memory a DVD can hold 4.2 gig and a CDR only 800 meg..so it will take several CD-Rs.
BUT most off putting is the fact that you will get a copy which will not be more than Stereo quality sound (normal audio CD and no 5.1 or DTS) and the video quality will be slightly better than VHS.
Akin to a VCD in essence.
So it can be done but spread over several CD-Rs with very reduced quality...not worth it.

Sorry, I confused you guys.
The article claims that you can put a recordable DVD disc into a CD-R drive, and burn 4GB (or whatever its capacity) onto it using Nero (not burning 4GB onto a CD-R). So basically the person is saying you don't need a DVD burner to burn DVDs.
But yes those were my thoughts, whoever claims that is a bit of a moron...
Ahhh now I understand the original question and yes I agree about burning a DVD onto a DVD-R using a CD writer and their wonderful software, then I will say no, it can not be done.
I have two reasons; 1. If it was that simple I think the software companies would be onto it a LONG time age. 2. To the best of my knowledge a CD writer does not have the capacity to burn to a dual layer disc as most DVDs are...they are not able to alter the focal length of the laser to burn to the "second" layer. I would still have sever doubts about audio and video quality as well.
I am prepared to stand corrected but logoc alone says it is a con.

Without reading any of the referred to web sites. I gather we are talking about using a CDR(W) drive to write data (DVD in particular) on to a DVD-R disc when armed with a version of Nero.
I would think the CDR(W) drive won't even read DVD format disc let alone write to it. Otherwise why would anyone bother to buy a DVD-ROM drive?
If someone claims that a DVD movie can be down graded to a different format, then I think it is quite possible to fit a movie on to a couple of CDRs. Either in MPEG1, MPEG2 or Divx (or what ever it is called). This would have not been any secrete just as people know how to copy a DVD movie to a VHS tape.:)

hi...
i have been wondering if a dvd (used for data storage) can be burnt using a cd writer...??
i know the multi layers wont be used but still more space could be utilized than a regular cd...
is this possible, and if so how much space could be utilized...?

No, sorry a DVD writer is needed to write to DVD+or-R(w) or CD-R(w) discs.
A CD writer will only write to CD-R(w)'s.

You fools, its very simple to burn dvds to Cd-rs.... just store it like you would any data. i.e. Put in a blank disk, open the drive window, should be blank, then just drag the movie file you want in it, and press copy. Not hard at all. It can only play on other computors as far as I know how to do for free. But I do know there is software out there that with save the file in a format readable by most DVD players. If anybody knows any free ways to change it to the format, please say.

You cannot store enough data on a cd to do this, unless the dvd has been converted to another format, thereby losing quality.
The original question ( 3 years ago!!) was to whether or not you could use a CD burner to burn DVD discs, and the answer is NO.
