I have a Packard Bell computer with a 56k modem and tried to connect to the internet. When we tried to sign on we received a message that the modem does not detect a dial tone. The computer is three years old and this is the first time trying to use the modem. All the wires are connected and in working condition. We also had the phone company check internal and external lines. Does anyone know what could be the problem. Do you think it is just a bad modem or is something set wrong?

Thanks,
Jay

Somewhere in Phone and Modem Options in Control Panel, you can specify whether or not to wait for a dial tone before it starts dialing. If you are sure you have a dial tone then sometimes this works ok. Other wise a pause in front of the number might be the way to go eg:

,5555 5555
(the comma is a pause)

For a quick dial-tone check plug a phone into the phone jack of the modem and listen for the tone.

Double-check to see that the line-out jack on the modem is the one connected to the wall socket.
