Browsing Nokia's website I found a phone, the E50. Its specs suggest
that it does GSM 850 as well as other bands. Would something like this
work on the new 3G 850 network?

No.
Only phones that can do UMTS 850 will work on the new 3G network.
Personally, I am waiting for Motorola to release, say, a UMTS 850 version
of the v3x or something :)

UMTS850/2100.. we can only hope =)
