Carlton takes tough line on Thornton

CARLTON defender Bret Thornton's future was in limbo yesterday after the
Blues refused to discuss a trade with Hawthorn.
The uncontracted Thornton has been offered a three-year deal by the Hawks,
but Carlton has deemed him a required player.
His manager Anthony McConville warned that the defender would nominate for
the pre-season draft if Carlton did not trade him before Friday's 2pm
deadline.
Although Carlton has first pick in the pre-season draft, Thornton's expected
hefty price tag could scare the Blues away.
McConville said Thornton did not want to remain at Carlton.
"At the end of the day if a player doesn't wish to be at a place, or
workplace environment, I suppose it's difficult to force them," he said.
"And I suppose that's the situation Carlton has been placed in, and for that
matter Bret, but he is adamant he wants to go to Hawthorn.
"He wants Carlton to benefit from a trade, the last thing he wants is for
Carlton not to receive anything for him.
"But he is prepared to take that on if necessary."
McConville said if a deal wasn't struck, there was nothing to stop the Blues
from picking up Thornton in the pre-season draft.
"If they do, they do," McConville said.
"The pre-season is dictated by order and Carlton has the first pick and
Essendon the second. I suppose for Carlton to choose Bret is up to them.
"Clearly you nominate your terms and conditions in the pre-season draft."
McConville accused the Blues of having ample opportunity to negotiate with
Thornton.
"It's fair to say Bret has been disappointed," he said.
McConville denied Thornton wanted out of Princes Park because of a dispute
with coach Denis Pagan.
"It's got nothing to do with Denis Pagan," he said.
Hawthorn, which has pick No. 6 in the pre-season draft, is believed to have
offered Thornton a deal which would earn him almost $1 million over three
years.
