Nope. But I guess they will have to be granted one in 2010 or whenever they
turn off the Analogue tv system.

They want one (in this case, I'm referring to the Melbourne Channel 31,
but I'm sure it applies equally to all the others), but the government won't
get off its arse and give them a licence for it.

The best thing to do would be to write a polite letter to your local MP,
senators and the Minister for Communications.

There are no available channels until analogue is turned off.
Best thing would be for the government to give them a 2mb/s slot on
the SBS digital MUX. This would get them on digital at no transmission
cost and adequate quality for the programme content.

Thats incorrect - each area that has a DCP has 2 reserved channels for
future use. Potentially Community stations could be involved in
whatever Senator Coonan decides will be appropriate for these channels

With any luck the winning bidder for "Channel A" will be required to carry
the community channels, otherwise they might be stranded on analogue until
analogue shutdown. That would be a pity. Granting them space on digital
spectrum would be an ideal opportunity to drive viewership for the community
channels (and is quite possibly the reason they are still on the outer).

It will depend on how Channel A is licenced - each Community station is
different and there are areas that dont get community tv so there could
be some opposition to such a plan from potential suitors for ChA

Yeah, like they'll listen.
The fucks won't even give us country hicks a decent ABC radio station,
let alone allow some community station to broadcast in digital.

That's because they know that most of you country hicks will keep voting
National, no matter what they do :P

Hopefully that will change. The sycophant McGauran, our MHR has voted
for the media laws to be relaxed. I mailed him expressing my disquiet
over the whole affair. The gutless prick hasn't gotten back to me.
My next letter to him will be to remind him that he will have to deal
with my constant barrage of letters to the local papers and he'll be
forced to explain his position on media ownership.
Not, probably, that this'll make an ounce of difference.

I think you'll be lucky if you manage to make it to the next election without
him following his brother across to the Liberal party ;)

Hope he does, then. I doubt that he'll secure much of a vote if he's a
Liberal. When the boundaries changed just prior to the last election,
our incumbent, a Labor lad, Christian Zahra was fairly safe. But then,
the McMillan electorate took in the fast growing east corridor out outer
Melbourne suburbia and hence more right wing voters. He was out and
Broadbent was in.
With McGuaran, he garnered, initially a lot more of the left wing voters
that would normally have voted for Zahra when Gippsland moved westwards.
I was sure that he'd be looking for a Liberal Party hack job following
the election, but it wasn't to be so. Too many farmers, I think, still
like the guy. Should he follow younger bro, Jules over to the dark side
(darker side), then who knows.
