Hi All,
On the AU the button for the handbrake stays in when the brake is released,
could this be the reason that the wheels squeak at low speed (as you take
off) or is that just a Ford thing?
Thanks
Simon

I would think the button would normally be high and down only when
pressed , perhaps some lubrication on the handle ?

It's a Ford thing.

Here's an extract from fordforums.com.au from a Ford tech.
---
"park brake, and thats what it is designed for, its not designed to do
handbrake slides, there is a correct adjustment procedure, and if followed
properly, fixes first time easily, do not let anyone adjust just at the
cable, the linings need to be checked and adjusted correctly which requires
removal of rear discs, and 8 to 10 notches on the handbrake lever is normal,
less than 8 and you will just be wearing out the linnings, which is the sole
cause of noise from the handbrake area..... if you wanna do handbrake
slides, go back to drum rear brakes"
---
Oh and it's not a Ford - only thing, Noddy is stuck in 1969 ;)
It is a crude handbrake system though, if you want the squeak to stop pull
it up when driving and that will quickly shut it up :)

I was talking about the noise. It *is* a Ford thing :)

The AU runs the internal brake band type handbrake mechanism like Holden
does. They work pretty well as a parking brake, but *not* as an emergency
stopping device. Applying the handbrake in an AU whilst the vehicle is
moving is likely to see the handbrake shoe juicy fruited.
However, in having said that, they are *vastly* superior to the fucking
appalling "corkscrew" type piston deal that Ford ran on their rear discs all
the way up to the ED :)

I once accidentally drove from the garage to the driveway with mine on.
Strangely enough the squeaks did stop.... for about 3 months anyway!!
I complain about my 4 year old AUIII Fairmont (ie, a taxi with some
extra woodgrain and velour seats) doing it but then I see a new BF
Fairlane with the same shitty squeaks. Gotta feel sorry for the guy who
paid $60k and cops $150+ a week in depreciation for a car that squeaks
every time he leaves the car park!!

It is a Ford thing since Ford have used some truly shitful handbrake designs
even in recent years.
And before adjusting the rear handbrake linings you need to back off the
handbrake lever adjustment first.
