About time they are ditching NEIN
http://www.smh.com.au/news/business/pbl-shares-go-into-trading-halt/2006/10/17/1160850904189.html

It would be very nice to bury them all in a big hole and forget them
For all those NEIN watchers this might be the day we have all been waiting
for.

PBL will still retain a controlling interest, so what difference will it
make?

The really worrying rumor is that the reason why PBL is cashing up is
because they intend to buy a huge slab of Testra ... given the way
technology is going it would be a very smart move and does an end run on
the media ownership laws.

It also makes it easier for the two ****faced Companies to continue to
treating customers/audiences with complete disdain.

Me thinks we need some misuse of market power legislation like the US
used to slap Micrososft and Bell Telephones (I think it was wasn't it?)

Nah. They want Fairfax.

Little Jamie wants to play Telephones again! OneTel crashed and they took
his toys away, now he can get lots more.

Oh boy. Imagine Telstra with Packer People in charge.

Yep. But we won't get them under the current gov't. They like to see fat
companies getting fatter, and they stop the population getting too disgusted
about it by use of diversionary issues like Evil Rampant Illegal Immigrants,
Terr'rists or whatever is handy at the time.

Eek. If there was ever a reason to buy T3 that would have to be it.

Yea - it's a scary piece of gossip that I am now wondering if it was
planted by Sol and Little Johhny.

Personally I think Telstra should be split up - let's face it even with
the ten or so years of culture reform they still treat customers like shit.

The reality is though, if they don't get off their arses and stop
relying on the copper cable they ARE going to be ****ed in the next 5-10
years.

Yep, the only way they could make Telstra worse.

Telstra should have been forced to divest itself of Foxtel first. Why the
hell should taxpayers have any ownership of a pay TV company? Having a phone
is a basic necessity. I believe that. But pay TV? **** that.

Nothing wrong with my ADSL2+ connection. I'm 2km from my exchange and get
16Mbps down. If they need something for people further afield then deal to
that, for those of us in urban areas copper is perfectly OK.

Getting off topic tho.

IMO: the more the market deregulates whilst Telstra owns the copper
infrastructure the more Telstra becomes a dog. Should it ever be split
properly into a wholesale and retail structure, that will kill the
retail arm which is inept and over charging (but don't know how that
will happen if it is all sold off). Also after 2007 Wi-max will decimate
both the fixed and mobile (3G) market.
Bottom line: Telstra is a dog, and they would be throwing their money
away. If they want to get into the telecom business again, they would be
better off waiting for Unwired who own the Wi-max spectrum in Australia
to need propping up if their current cash burn weakens them (already a
cheap but very uncertain buy). Intel is backing Wi-Max hugely.
There is also the concern that content is king. Forget being a telecom
in a saturated market having to rely on market volumes with ever
decreasing margins.

Kevin,

I don't think the majority of Australians live within 2kms of an
exchange - the majority of ADSL2 customers? Yes by definition they have
too ... given this do you realise the logical error you are making?

I understand that if you are happy you could not give a rats arse about
the anyone else ... but that sort of marketing strategy is not likely to
work for Telstra in the (short) long run.
