Does anyone have any information about the exact problem with the Riverside
Expressway? Hopefully it will turn into a political shit storm to provide
us with a lot of entertainment.
It weird to see it like empty like this:

2 metre long 4mm crack on the Ann Street Onramp.
One theory is the recent resurfacing may have been to blame.

I heard it was the expansion joint jammed instead of sliding and so it
buckled when it expanded.

Yeah quite possibly I just heard about the crack through the normal
work grapevine. I work in the CBD so its been a hot topic for a few
days around here.

the overpass sections, like the rest of the expressway and Captain Cook
Bridge are supposed to move on rubber blocks when weight shifts, this
allows for expansion and contraction also
the problem is when they were resurfaced the other weekend somehow a
couple of the joints locked up and the spans are now off balance on the
pilons, this created cracks due to the weight not being centred
engineers are trying to find what caused the lockup and rectify it,
could be as simple as hotmix dropping into a cavity and hardening

I'm more interested in the structural point of view that they think it'l be
fine and won't need replacing or fixing. Where abouts is the crack, on the
top of the bridge or the bottom? If it's the bottom I figured it's be a
throw away job, start again. Then again, I'm sure there's plenty of
companies out there that specialise in uber concrete structure repair. It'l
be interesting to see what happens anyway.

'Press' says there's a hairline crack in the decking.
No doubt you've heard that as well as the orf jokes doing the rounds.
Earlier there was information about a bearing and the fact that the Ann
Street overpass had parted company with the bearing.
No-one mentioned whether the bearing was now 'lower' than the point it was
supposed to contact - likely, or whether it was beside the point it was
supposed to contact - equally likely.
Howerer, the second alternative appears the favourite to me, because the
Alice Street overpass is also under the gun. And it's a twin of the Ann st
construct.
Actually, both are curves bridges and I reckon both have become shorter -
else the pylons have moved downhill - towards the river - either
problem being not flash at all for a curved bridge supported once
mid-curve.
If that's what has happened, both the bridges will need to be torn down
and replaced, unless some genius can actually fins a way to shift the
pylons with the bearings. I say genius, because the pylons are right in
amongst the rest of the expressway structure beneath the overpasses in
question.
I hear a story (in a lift in a building chockers with Insurance Shysters,
at that) that both ramps would need to be ripped down and rebuilt.
So that's what my money's on at the moment..
Somewhat different story, but worth worrying about, is the fact that the
Victoria Bridge, with absolutely no moving traffic on it, actually shakes
when vehicles pass beneath it on the expressway. Test it out - it's *very*
noticeable.
Now that bridge is not actually connected with the structure of the
expressway in any way.
Which means that the expressway is actually moving enough to transfer it's
movement to the northern support system for Vic bridge.
(Hell, it's an irrelevance anyway, due mainly to the amazing fact that the
fuckwits responsible for the mall blocked off a street that ended in a
bridge across the fucken river....
I know of no other place in aus that this has been done.
Unsurprising, of course.
But the implications of my observation of the matter is that the entire
expressway might actually be a major problem, not just the two overpasses
so far involved.
So...
We're being 'softened up' for the news that the whole shootin match needs
to be dismantled?
??
Well, why are the (old) plans for an Adelaide street bridge being dusted
off? Why is the Hale Street TOLL bridge being pushed like all hell?
And there's this:
Brisvegas city is on Shale and possible porphry.
This is the reason that Brisvegas hasn't got many significant underground
structures - it's absolute shite going for tunnellers - unlike where all
those cockroaches live.
It's going to be most entertaining to watch the cost over-runs on the TOLL
tunnel from Bowen Hills to the Gobba.
(They've already started, as you'll have heard). Still, the overburden
will assist those Dutch bastards in their new runway building (for the
projected increased amphetamine imports) out at Pinkenba. Shale is quite
stable enough for that caper if you pound the shite out of it with rollers.
I reckon that's the main kick-back for the TOLL Tunnel pusher(s) :-)
There's a bit to go on with.
In the mean time I'm having fun watching all the Typical Brisbane
Shitheads cramming the roads closest to the dead expressway and in the
process blocking those few normal Brisbane shitheads from getting out to
the relatively quiet other river crossings.
Most of *those* problems are stemming from road closures and other
traffic calming imbecility that's made travel on anything but radar
and lidar (and soon fixed speed camera) revenuer infested 'main' roads
virtually impossible.

The claim is that the crack is in the deck of the thing.
no mention as to whether it's also in (through)the rest of the structure
- but then again, would you expect that to be made public?
Also, todays claim is the the crack, now under careful and expert
observation, ain't getting any bigger:-)

and yet I left chermside at 07:35 this morning headed for Wickham St for
an 08:00 appointment
got all the way to half way along Water St before the traffic came to a stop
would you believe I had 2 red lights from Chermside to water st, all the
rest were green and bugger all traffic
I did a right up to Gregory Tce and back along College Rd and around to
Wickham Tce and was there before 08:00
traffic jam? What taffic jam?

It's amazing how the traffic has improved since people have abandoned
unnecessary trips to the city. This also means the tools who are
unfamiliar with peak hour traffic "rules" aren't on the road causing
traffic jams.

Let us not forget that the riverside expressway was built in the Joh era
when most government decisions involved a paper bag full of cash or a
job for their mates.

All I can say is; Brisneylanders learn fast!
I did a similar journey (although I left a half-hour later) on Tuesday and
it was grid-lock the whole way!

Can't see any relevance between the work done now and then , bribery is

I'd be stunned if the original design called for the usage it gets now.
So Joh's responsible 30 years on but somehow Beatie is not for water,
power, health, and now also roads maintenance.
Nice one, come in spinner!

OK - I was almost on the mark with that diatribe.
Radio this afternoon has a caller that purported to know what the fuck
went on.
Don't ask me why I was listening to redneck radio at the time - can't
explain it myself:-)
Anywhere, here's what I heard:
Caller was a 'Knows A Bloke That Works For A Company That Was Involved'
type.
'Apparently' while the expressway was being resurfaced last
week-end, some complete imbeciles either were directed to, (or or their
own volition, in which case they were still imbeciles, just lesser ones.)
park some vehicles on the Ann St ramp. The stuff involved appears to have
been an asphalt laying machine, a roller and a tipper full of black
steaming shit. Yes, the machinery was on it's trailers, complete with
prime movers. Remember, that would have been during the week-end.
They had to reverse off the ramp, because the 'step' caused by their
weight was too high for the trucks to negotiate.
All up weight estimate by the caller was in the region of 100 tons.
So, the pylon has dropped, natch. And the cracking of the deck was very
probably caused by off centre loading while the machinery was on the ramp.
In short, the bearing for the pylon is no longer touching the underside
of the ramp.
Interestingly, the Alice Street ramp must have copped the same treatment -
like use as a heavy equipment parking lot - but failed to misbehave in the
same manner as Ann. But it's under examination I'll bet for that reason.
Alice is also not as steep a ramp as Ann. Might have something to do with
it all.
This sort of gels with the Insurance Shyster infested building knowing
more about this than the press, mainly because there's furious effort
being expended in the 'who's to fucken blame' stakes.
Further good linking type evidence? Well, a certain representative of the
construction industry was mouthing off about private industry fixing the
problem, because GovCo Main Roads hadn't come up with a solution.
Yeah, right.
This was shortly after that call, which was no-doubt a rocket advice
from media monitors types to their numerous vain customers almost the
instant it went to air. Besides, all involved have had much more than from
last Tuesday to get their lies sorted...
We might just be hearing someone sounding out the possibilities
of getting the problem fixed by whoever is really to blame, on the house, so to speak.
And on the QT, for that matter.
Of course, the whole thing might be bullshit.
After all, there's ample precedent for mass bullshitting even outside Usenet.
Really, it's bloody hard to keep focused on the numerous
wars and other shenanigans relating to tewwowists when local events are so
amusing.
