G'day from London!

Will the Ashes be shown back home in Australia in HD? I'm over in
the UK and there's some discussion on forums here
(http://www.digitalspy.co.uk Sky HD forum) as to whether Sky TV (and
the BBC for highlights) will show the series in HD. The word is that
the Australian broadcaster (Channel 9) won't be showing it in HD, but
I thought you guys over here would know for sure. All UK cricket is
now in stunning HD and it would be great to see us take back the Ashes
this summer in glorious high definition. We whipped the Poms yesertday
in India in the one dayer!

Cheers guys,

David

Foxtel haven't introduced HD yet and I don't know when it will happen? None
of the FTA channels (7,9, or 10) have HD.

Just for interest how much extra does it cost in the UK to get the STB for
HD reception?

Depends on the HD channls you want. For the free HD channels
(currently only BBC HD) you pay around £250 for a free-to-view HD Box
such as a Humax HDCI-2000 or a Pace. More free to view channels (such
as ITV HD) are due soon

If you want the subscripton channels from Sky (e.g. Sky Sports HD,
ArtsWorld, National Geographic, Discovery HD etc.) you pay around
£150 for a HD box, and then a subscription monthly (currently around
£30) for about 7 HD channels, and you also get PCR functionality for
an extra £10/month. Max package is £45 a month which is a lot. Full
details at www.sky.com/hd

How much does HD cost back home in Aus?

Nope. Channel sub-contract OBs and haven't requested HD as it's doesn't
bring them any exta dollars from unilaterals or advertisers.

Looks like UK viewers will be disappointed for 2 reasons:
1) That they can't watch the Ashes in HD.
2) England don't retain the Ashes and they are won by Aussie bringing
the overall score to Australia 31, England 27 with 5 draws ;-)

Let me put you wise son.

Oz has DIGITAL TV not HDTV. The US have had HDTV for sometime and the UK
introduced it in July of this year, in time for the World cup.

To get HDTV you will need a new STB, pay an extra subscription to Foxtel
(when they introduce it) and use a cable from your HDMI output on the STB.

You may have a LCD or Plasma TV that is HD ready, but you certainly don't
have HDTV.

Believe me, you will know the difference between HD and digital

Now go to your room and finish colouring in your books. There's a good boy.

Don't you consider 1080i to be HD, as broadcast by channels 9 and 10
regularly? Some of it is actually HD source material too.

I'm pretty sure The ABC was broadcasting in 720p material in 720p
recently too.

There seems to be a difference of opinion here. I think I'll ask
Channel 9 directly via their Digital TV contact forums at
http://discussion.ninemsn.com.au/default.asp

Unfortunately the Digital TV forums states the following error so I'll
try later :-(

Well we can all put "sugar ray lamotta" into the kill file. Obviously hasn't
a clue about HD. I checked up on all his (its) posts since the name was
first used. There are 37 and only started posting in August this year.
(TV,aus and WA politics, WA and UK football, and music lyrics). Probably
used some other idiot name before then. There is a common thread. Usually
he doesn't know what he is talking about and when corrected resorts to
abuse.

Here is an example from another group "An appropriate name you piece of
dogs puke. How old are you son? Go to
your room and finish colouring in your book you stupid boy.
Oh! Do you or your parents work for Foxtel?

Sound familiar?? :-) He appears to have an obsession with colouring books.

Into the kill file now,, and if he resurfaces with a new name, will get sent
there again.

Returning to the original question:
The place to ask is http://www.dba.org.au/forum.html
Channel 9 will put the program out on SD (channel 9 digital) and on HD
(channel 90 digital ).
Maybe even use channel 99 (SD) for stats and replays as they have done in
the past.
But the question is will the HD be just upscaled SD or native HD.
The other question is if HD cameras are used at the ground and picture
displayed in HD in OZ will it be transmitted to the UK in HD?

For those interested
http://www.ee.washington.edu/conselec/CE/kuhn/hdtv/95x5.htm
and http://www.wusa9.com/special/hdtv.aspx#whatisdifference
gives some background about HD in the USA which started a number of years
later than OZ but with similar parameters.

post in the group.

How's about I decide when and if you post?

You did some research on me? What are you ASIO, CIA. For God's sake grow
up.

Five minutes of keyword searching a usenet archive does not a government agent make.

What is my definition of definition????????

Read the message again, and (notwithstanding spelling) explain what you are having trouble understanding:

>> Is 1080i High defination or not?? what is your defination of it?

So the question to you is "What is your definition of High Definition"?

Most people would reasonably argue that both 720p and 1080i constitute HD. If you disagree, you need to justify your position.

Kill file?

You the leader of the pack? The head honcho who decides who posts and
doesn't?

I've had to deal with egomaniacs like you all my life. I chew you up and
spit you out and it will take a lot more than you to decide when and if I
post in the group.

How's about I decide when and if you post?

You don't seem to understand the concept of a killfile, it is a mechanism to allow subscribers (ie. readers) of usenet traffic to suppress the display of messages from particular posters. There is no suggestion here of preventing you from posting, that is clearly your right. It is also the right of someone to filter out posts that they see based on the author, and additionally their right to suggest that others do likewise.

No Ashes on FTA? I had heard that Aussie PM John Howard had stepped in
when the rights for the Ashes were due to go to pay-per-view to ensure
that it was on FTA in Australia. Is that not the case?

You forgot to read the last two words of David's sentence (if you can consider
"HD" to be a word).

He did not say that they would not show it at all, just that they would not
show it in high definition.

The HD situation in Australia (well NSW anyway) at the moment is thus:

SBS HD = 576P or 1080i
ABC HD = 720P (Planet Earth looked fantastic!!!)

7 HD seems to be 1080i for their demo loop and upscaled SD for their
content. I haven't checked the content with a HD source yet.

9 HD seems to be upscaled SD except where the content source is HD then
it's 1080i. I noticed that the rugby league was upscaled to 1080i and
the audio to AC3 dolby.

10 HD seems to be the same setup as 7 and 9. Southern Cross 10 have a
nice HD demo loop @ 1080i with AC3
